Obama Takes Credit For Bush Surge Tonight

Iran Fundies are growing in power only because Bush did not have the CIA clean house in our State Department and the traitors at State sold out the Iranian students.

US State is an unAmerican criminal enterprise and the next Republican President better fumigate the whole department from top to bottom

Agreed. It is supposed to be the branch of Governement responsible for the President's Foreign Policy. It basically works in reverse these days.

the surge did exactly what it was supposed to do. Give the Iraqis the time they needed to get control of their own government according to their own constitution. That we have pulled out before they got their shit together may come back and bite us. Of course in that case it will Bush's fault.

American Progressives are still steamed that Bush wouldn't turn Iraq over to their hero Al Sadr and the Iranian Sponsored, Soviet backed Insurgency (Do you see where their loyalties lie?).

They really despise the fact that Bush beat the Iraqi Army AND the Iraqi Insurgency allowing our military to leave the battlefield victorious.

They so desperately wanted another Tet, when even after we inflicted one of the biggest asskicking in military history on the enemy, the Left, lead by Cronkite can declare defeat and have us leave disgraced.

wrong. The initial invasion was a boneheaded mistake. Once the troops hit the ground, all I ever wanted was for them to win every skirmish, for every bullet they fired to hit its target and for every bullet fired at them to miss. And then I wanted them to leave as soon as possible.

Iraq WILL soon be a close ally of Iran, and shiite fundamentalists will increase their power in Iraq. That will now happen because we took down the strong man that had prevented it from happening.

And this will gain us what? At the cost of a trillion dollars and 4500 US lives.....

The CBO figured out the cost of the Iraq War at $703 billion.

The Stimulus Bill alone was almost $900 billion. Let's not mention all of the bailouts and all of the debt that Obama has let Freddie Mac take on since he was elected plus the Health Care bill.

Bush and Obama have spent $703 billion over 8 years on Iraq....and Obama has spent about $2 trillion in just over a year on what? Nobody really knows.

The tortured mind of a private education student who leaned right. If Bush borrowed a Trillion from the Communists and only spent $703B, what did he do with the rest of money? Nobody really Knows is not an answer.

So, what kind of return on our investments are we looking at? $703B spent so far in Iraq? No return. And let us NEVER forget the 4500 lives that have been lost in that invasion and occupation.

Obama is reinvesting in America. Questionably, 3.3 million jobs saved or created. Reinvesting our money back in our country. Now THAT is a return on investment, and it didn't cost us 4500 US lives either.

WTF are you talking about???

Where did you get one trillion from?

I sighted how much was spent....obviously the rest of the cash (if your figures are correct) is ether being spent on something else, bailouts and bribes, or still remains in the Treasury.

But nobody seems to know what Obama did with the Stimulus.

What does this have to do with something that the Congressional Budget Office has released?

Obama is going to attempt to take credit in a speech tonight for a plan that Bush put in place before leaving office. I'm just giving you folks a heads up on this.

To his credit Obama didn't try to stop the plan from going into effect on schedule.....or did he?

Turns out when he was a Senator Obama tried to bribe Iraqi officials into making no agreements with Bush just to steal his idea from under him.

Obama Tried To Stall GIS' Iraqi Withdrawal

WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a "realistic withdrawal date." They declined.

I think the only thing Obama should be congratulated for is not screwing it up too badly.

The biggest question is will Obama give Bush any credit for the Surge or the drawdown plan he put in place?

I seriously doubt it.

Why look back and give credit to W?? After all he is no longer president so why should he get the credit for anything??
The right has made a habit out of refusing to look back and give W "credit" for things that began on his watch so why the flip flop on this??

Thanks to all ofthe hypocritical rightwingers in this thread who selectively choose when it's ok to look back to give W "credit" and when it's not ok. LOL

An article from December 2007 is not very convincing. Adding troops is not an add water and stir endeavor. The surge took time to be fully effective.

The surge was announced a year before that.

But the Sunni Awakening, the primary reason the Iraq war turned around, was already underway months BEFORE that.

40% of the CBO's calculated cost of the stimulus was lost revenues due to the stimulus bill's 300 billion in tax cuts.

And the stimulus wasn't about getting Americans killed for absolutely no good reason, so compariing it to the Iraq war cost is a bit, well, retarded.

More of Petraeus:

Petraeus is careful not to credit all the progress to the surge of U.S. troops in 2007. The sea change came last year from a series of movements now known as the Awakening, when Sunnis, organizing around traditional tribal leaders, decided to turn on Al Qaeda as "an organization that embraces an extremist ideology, employs indiscriminate violence, and practices oppressive social customs," in the general's words. One of those customs was a ban on smoking. "That was the turning point when they cut the fingers off the first person who was smoking," he jokes. "Can you imagine an Anbar sheik being told he can't smoke?" So would the Sunni Awakening have succeeded without the surge? Possibly, he concedes, but the surge came at that time and helped empower Sunni leaders, paying their fighters and backing them up on the streets. This is where Seneca the Younger comes in: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

Why???? Because Obama is attempting to take credit for what he did. To top it off Obama never admitted the Surge was a success nor did he ever say it would work. So it's a bit unseemly for him now to be claiming it as his success.

VP Biden said a few months ago that Iraq would be Obama's greatest success. It may be....even though he inherited it from Bush.

I was disappointed, although not surprised that Obama didn't give Bush any credit for the troop surge. I was also perplexed that Obama used the airtime to talk about the economy when the speech was supposed to be about Iraq and the brave and heroic men and women who made Iraq a better place.

Which is worse....killing people in the fight against bigotry and religious intolerance.....or killing them by ruining millions of their lives?

Obama policies are so expensive that he'll have to raise our taxes to pay for it and as a result make everything more expensive....and cause millions of us to lose our jobs, or homes, our hopes and dreams, and our freedom.

bigotry and religious intolderance on the other side of the world is NOT America's problem. The invasion of Iraq was "sold" to the gullible and fearful and angry American public by first making the case that Saddam had stokpiles of WMD's that could cause a "mushroom cloud over an American city" and then making the even more ridiculous case that a pan arab ba'athist would EVER give ANY weapons of ANY kind to an islamic extremist wahhabist. OBL's "prime directive" was the destruction of the secular arab nation states in the region of the great caliphate. Why in the WORLD would anyone think that Saddam would give such weaponry (which we now know he never had in the first place) to an organization that was dedicated to his own demise?

Your brain is in your ass as usual.

The dangerous scenario is that Obama never acts quickly when it comes to matters of type. When it comes to domestic policies...when it comes to spending us into bankruptcy....he's on that like stink on shit.

Obama has tipped off what the mission is and because he's made a proud statement that combat is over in Iraq the enemy has an advantage. Obama doesn't want to go through the embarrassment of admitting he pulled out too soon. Bush never set an exact date. He said it would be dictated by conditions on the ground....not some artificial drop-dead cut and run deadline. So now Obama has painted himself into a corner....and if everything goes to shit in Iraq he'll just ignore it till it bits him in the ass. Meanwhile our kids will die because his pride won't allow him to adapt to changing events in a place he has officially turned the page on.

You claimed in your OP that this is Bush's plan that Obama is executing ... that this plan was put in place by the Bush Admin and that Obama is trying to steal credit for it. Yet now you want to claim that this is all on Obama and anything that goes bad is his fault. So which is it? Bush's withdrawal or Obama's? You can't have your cake and eat it too. Make up your mind and get back to me.

It was laid out in the Forces Reduction Agreement made back in 2008.

Obama felt the need to pound his chest and make an announcement to the world that he had fulfilled a campaign promise when in fact this was already in the works before he took office. He would have been better off keeping his mouth shut but instead he chose to blast off his big mouth. He officially took credit for it so whatever happens from here on in belongs to him and him alone.

WHERE?? There were only two dates in the section that pertained to withdrawing our troops from iraq and that was the jun 2009 withdrawal of our "combat troops" from iraqi cities and the dec 2011 date for complete withdrawal of our forces. So where in the SOFA does it say that "combat troops" will be removed NOW??
