WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The massive U.S. stimulus package put millions of people to work and boosted national output by hundreds of billions of dollars in the second quarter, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday.
CBO's latest estimate indicates that the stimulus effort, which remains a political hot potato ahead of the November congressional elections, may have prevented the sluggish U.S. economy from contracting between April and June.
CBO said President Barack Obama's stimulus boosted real GDP in the quarter by between 1.7 percent and 4.5 percent, adding at least $200 billion in economic activity.


This report came from the *NONPARTISAN* CBO, not a left leaning site or organization, no way to palliate yourselves out of this one.

We do not deny the boosts. Of course sales will increase when there is a progrma offering money in return.

Question is...how will that affect later sales?

As we saw with hoime sales...increasing quarter 1 and 2 KILLED quarter 3.

SO no gain at all at the cost of 8K per home sold.

But, of course....why respond to that?

I will give the President credit for creating a policy so bad it has prolonged what should have been a short recession into one of the longest in history. Well, him and his masters in Congress.

The recession was already long before Obama took office - 13 months long, in fact. Since he took office, we've gone from:

losing 800K jobs per month and shedding 7% SAAR of our production each quarter

to:

Creating private sector jobs each month, and adding total jobs in all but one month over the past six, with the economy increasing production over each of the last three quarters.

I have seen recoveries. This isn't one of them.

Those were the same hopes Republicans expressed about Bill Clinton.

Just because the CBO is labeled "non partisan" does not make it so. Last time this came up, it was discovered the CBO had attributed jobs creation solely to their assumption that gov't spending creates jobs. Gov't spent X amount of dollars, ergo Y amount of jobs MUST have been created. There was no actual analytic work of data, merely an argument based on their assumption. This is no different.
This is why they could score the health care bill revenue neutral but had to add a note saying that was baed on certain assumptions they had to make. Take away those assumptions (which were wrong btw) and the bill was a tremendous cost.

It was oil-embargos that had the most-negative impact on Carter's economy.

Likewise, it does not take rocket science to recognize that offering an $8,000 tax credit to first time home buyers will result in a spike in new home sales.

Furthermore, it does not take rocket scinece to recognize that offering $4,000 to new car buyers for their older vehicles that are worth well less than $4.000 will result in a spike in new car sales.

Nobody is denying the stimulus added some jobs.

However if did not come close to doing what we were told it would do, and most of the jobs it added will be over when the money runs out and the "shovel" ready jobs are completed.

You want the President to get some credit. Fine he spent WAY TO FUCKING much money and managed to give us some short term temporary job and economic Growth. That will all come to an end just as soon as the money we didn't have to spend in the first place runs out.

I am not sure I would be looking for credit for that. IN the long run it was a net loss not a gain.
