Obama sends US troops to Uganda to help fight rebels

They need to take out one guy. Period. They should have done it years ago. But it seems that's not the goal,so I'm very nervous about this becoming a clusterfuck. Wouldn't things be so much easier if we could hire assassins?
Sadly? The Constitution doesn't allow for asassins...but they do for MILITARY ACTION...covertly...I might add...

This is my issue T. Our military's role these days is to "win hearts and minds" not to win wars. There are only a couple hundred LRA members. Unfortunately most of them are children. A "covert" team could take Kony out with little collateral damage. But I fear that's not what will happen.

Shame darlin' it has become detached from securing LIBERTY.

Try guesstimates up to 3,000. Again, the UN tried in 2006 with a covert team......up to 40 US trained Guatemalan Special-Ops troops never returned alive.
Go Team America..........:doubt:.

The Invisible Children say 250. They were the ones who lobbied for this legislation. But no matter what the number, none of his "soldiers" are members by choice.

I thought this was interesting: Posted Monday, September 19 2011 at 00:00

The US provided $4.4m (Shs12 billion) in support to the UPDF beginning in October 2009 after Ugandan Chief of Defence [Forces] requested assistance with tactical and logistical mobility,” the envoy wrote.

The briefing titled, ‘Uganda: Continued US support for anti-LRA efforts critical’, was wired in the month when Washington’s support was due to be terminated – and Ambassador Lanier made plain the withdrawal would “jeopardise” UPDF efforts.

He noted: “Uganda is close to eliminating the LRA as it has [never] been since the conflict began 23 years ago. Continued US logistical support is critical for sustaining the success of Ugandan operations since October 2009, and enabling the UPDF to reach Kony as he retreats northward through the Central Africa Republic (CAR).”

Why make it public now? Hmmm.

Let me guess? It's all for the children right? Oh well, another day another war. How many we up to now? I guess they have to distract Americans from the fact their own nation is dying. This stuff makes no sense.

Obama sends US troops to Uganda to help fight rebels

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama said Friday he is sending 100 "combat-equipped" troops to Uganda to help and advise forces battling Lord's Resistance Army rebels accused of grievous human rights abuses.

The US troops, subject to the approval of national authorities, could also deploy from Uganda into South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo, Obama said in a message to Congress.

LRA rebels are accused of terrorizing, murdering, raping and kidnapping thousands of people in the four nations, and tens of thousands of people died in their 20-year war with security forces in northern Uganda.

Why now? The libs holler about Bush going into Iraq and getting the murdering hussein, will they whine now?

No the left will not complain about the action in Uganda, our troops are helping muslims murder Christians. The left loves that.

Picking sides again. It's what we do. Oh Lord, when will this World's Policeman/Referee stuff go away? When will they learn?

How about Obama sending the Troops to help fight the Drug Cartels and the illegal alien invaders from all points of the planet from coming over the Southern border? Remember it only took 19 invaders to take down the Twin Towers.

During the year of 2005 there were 4 to 10 MILLION illegal aliens that crossed our Southern Border also, as many as 19,500 illegal aliens from Terrorist Countries. Millions of pounds of drugs, cocaine, meth, heroin and marijuana, crossed into the U. S. from the Southern border.

This a very good point. There is a War currently raging on our own Border. Uganda is for Ugandans. We just don't belong there. I cannot support the President's decision.

Uganda: 2.5 Billion Barrels of Oil Discovered

...2.5 billion barrels in the Lake Albert Rift Basin in Uganda

the area needs stability in order to facilitate drilling and pipelines.

Tullow Oil, UK based oil company, 2.5 billion barrels found in Uganda. China's national oil company is also tied in with a French company, Total, who have large holdings in those fields in Uganda. Also, there's lots of uranium.

central Africa has many natural resources, which would only be exploitable, in the absence of conflict. Seeking to decrease conflict, and increase business, promotes wealth for all involved. How else can Africans gain wealth, without business, trade, and exports?

Meanwhile, the conflict in Uganda festers from ethnic divisions, exacerbated by foreign interventions, over the past hundred years. The "bad guys" (Joseph Kony & LRA) are an ethnic minority (Acholi) from the north, on Uganda's border with Sudan:

The Acholi governed Uganda from 1985-1986, when they were ousted by the current Ugandan government. The LRA insurgency stems from that conflict, which has lasted for over a generation. Many of the million Acholi have been detained in 'concentration camps'.

The current Ugandan president (Yoweri Museveni) is an ethnic kin to the Tutsi of Rwanda, and the current Rwandan President (Paul Kagame). From 1960-1990, Hutus governed Rwanda, and two hundred thousand Tutsi refugees fled northwards, into Uganda. From Uganda, those Tutsi refugees then conquered Rwanda, from 1990-1994, in a civil war whose final stages included the infamous Rwandan Genocide. Since 1994, the Tutsis of Uganda & Rwanda have extended their influence westwards, into Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DRC), to protect Tutsi refugees, in the Congo Wars (1996-1999) and ensuing endemic insurgencies:

Estimate of territory held by factions in June 2003
That region (DRC) is also rich in "conflict minerals" (tantalum, tin, tungsten, gold). Conflicts between Hutus & Tutsis reflect conflicts between French ("Francophone") and Anglo-American ("Anglophone") influences, cp. "French fries after 9/11" and Pres. Obama's support of Uganda's Tutsi-led government.

Since 1990, more than six million Africans have died, in wars, genocides, and resulting famines & plagues. Inexpertly, more mineral wealth could be mined, with less death amongst the local workforce.

Ugandan police derail ‘imminent’ terror attack
Mon, Sep 15, 2014 - EMBASSY TWEETS: The US warned its citizens to take shelter during an antiterrorist action in the capital led by Ugandan law enforcement agencies
The US embassy in Uganda told its citizens to seek safety on Saturday, saying that local authorities had uncovered a “terrorist cell” run by Somali militant group al-Shabaab, which they believed was planning an imminent attack. Ugandan law enforcement later said it had foiled an attack in central Kampala and was increasing security at hotels and other public places, but declined to say who was behind the attack. The embassy, in a statement published on its Web site, said it was not aware of specific targets, but said the authorities had increased security at key sites including Entebbe International Airport. “Today, Ugandan authorities reported the discovery of an al-Shabaab terrorist cell in Kampala, Uganda,” the embassy said. “We remain in close contact with our Ugandan counterparts as investigations continue into what appears to have been planning for an imminent attack.”

Ugandan police forces and security agencies are seen outside one of Kampala’s most prominent malls on Saturday.

At a news conference later, Ugandan police said they had seized explosives and arrested an unspecified number of foreigners after foiling an attack. However, Fred Enanga, a spokesman for the Ugandan police force, declined to say whether he believed the cell was connected to al-Shabaab and to name the nationalities of those detained.

Uganda, as one of the countries that contribute forces to an African Union peacekeeping mission battling al-Shabaab in Somalia, has experienced militant attacks in recent years, and al-Shabaab has threatened to carry out more. The US embassy, shortly before issuing its announcement, told its citizens — via Twitter — to stay at home or proceed to a safe location while Ugandan authorities completed operations against a suspected cell in Kampala.

The embassy has said Uganda faces a “continued threat” and has issued other alerts during the year about possible attacks. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi in neighboring Kenya a year ago, in which 67 people died. This month the group warned of revenge against its enemies after it said its leader, Ahmed Godane, had been killed in a US air strike on his encampment in Somalia.
