Despite his repeated, detailed, and unambiguous pledges to recognize the Armenian Genocide, the President offered only euphemisms and evasive terminology to describe the murder of over 1.5 million men women and children – effectively keeping in place the gag rule imposed by the Turkish government on the open and honest discussion of this crime. In refusing, under foreign pressure from Turkey, to his honor his pledge, he again fell far short of his own view, as voiced during his campaign, that America deserves a President who uses the term “genocide” to convey the full factual, moral, legal, and contemporary political meaning of this crime against all humanity. “President Obama’s disgraceful capitulation to Turkey’s threats, his complicity in Turkey’s denials, and his Administration’s active opposition to Congressional recognition of the Armenian Genocide represent the very opposite of the principled and honest change he promised to bring to our country’s response to this crime,” said ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian.
“Instead of standing up for the truth, and standing by the extensive U.S. record on the Armenian Genocide, President Obama is today, under threat from an increasingly unfriendly foreign power, standing in the way of the broad-based American civil society consensus for a truthful and just resolution of this crime,” added Hachikian.
“For a President who ran for office on the platform of ‘change’ and ‘honesty’, his record on this score – including, notably, his deeply offensive reference today to ‘contested history,’ has been shameful.
He has, in addition to betraying his own words and compromising America’s moral standing, gravely disappointed Armenians here in the United States, in Armenia, and around the world who had looked to him as an example of courage, conviction, and conscience,” continued Hachikian
As a Senator and later as a Presidential candidate, President Obama pledged repeatedly to recognize the Armenian Genocide, stating, “America deserves a leader who speaks truthfully about the Armenian Genocide and responds forcefully to all genocides. I intend to be that President.” View his record on the issue.
Since then the President has, while asserting that his personal views of the events of 1915 have not changed, refused to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, mobilized his Administration to block Congressional recognition of this crime, and deployed his Secretary of State and diplomatic corps to pressure Armenia into the Ankara-driven Turkey-Armenia Protocols. The Administration has also failed to honor the President’s numerous commitments on a range of other Armenian issues, including Nagorno Karabakh, foreign aid, and bilateral trade.
Obama Again Betrays Promise to Recognize Genocide | Asbarez Armenian News

Lets applaud Obama's great moral cowardice. :clap2:

Turkey did not exist when this occurred and should not be held to account for something that happened so long ago and before it even existed as a State.

At least he did something right, this year. It has nothing to do with us about 100yrs later what the OTTOMAN Empire did. Get over it, move on.

Ho Hum. There goes Obama's fierce sense of moral urgency again.

I am glad that you awoke. but this shit has been going on for many years.

Obama's FP is atrocious. That is why many RW kooks agree with him on these regards. It is very "neo-con oriented".

Has any acting president formally recognized the Armenian (putative) genocide?

It appears that US policy on genocide is alot like our foriegn policy. To determine if your basic human right to live, first you must be evaluated. If you are of political, militaristic or economicical advantage to the US your rights are deemed worth fighting over depending on which side we want to win.

If you are not, then we will talk about how someone must stop the genocide. UN resolutions will be poassed and maybe sanctions if your lucky. The world will scold and shake fingers but do nothing.

Looking back at past genocides that were committed throught history, for as a long we have been a a country, it hasn't been a matter of who is president. It is a matter of US interests in the region.

You can go to International Court of Justice in The Hague and seek binding court rule. Politicians have no business in writing of history.

This thing won't come to ICJ (Court of Justice) because the so-called Armenian Genocide was just a sub-plot in WW1.
No country which was involved in WW1 wants to open that part of history in front-of courts.

Justin McCarthy of the University of Louisville concluded that a staggering 2.5 million Anatolian Muslims died in World War I and the Turkish War of Independence. More than 1 million died in the Six Provinces in Eastern Anatolia, as Armenians with the help of Russia’s invading armies sought to reclaim their historical homeland.

In contrast, best contemporaneous estimates place the number of Armenians who died in the war and its aftermath at between 150,000 and 600,000. The Armenian death count climbed to 1.5 million over the years on the back of political clout and propaganda.
Armenian crime amnesia? - Washington Times

Then there are the expulsions of Muslims from Balkans.
If you want to open WW1 in courts, go ahead!
If you don't go to court, stop bitching around in foreign parliaments.

Obama refuses to recognize Genocide

He was only confused. He thought it was the fan club for the Genoa basketball team.

If Obama wants to play the "only Christian deaths of WW1 counts"-game, he can go and.....himself.
Meanwhile Turkey will celebrate Gallipoli day today where a quarter Million Muslims died.

What shall these children walking through graveyards of WW1 think when they hear that Obama is remembering Christian deaths in a war where more Muslims died.
Why doesn't Obama say anything about the Muslim dead?
More Muslim died in the same war and yet only Christian loss counts for Obama.

Video of Muslim Woman carrying her child on arms is hit by Grenade in WW1. For Obama people like her don't count, because she's Muslim. If she were a Christian Obama would make speeches.
Look at 13 seconds
