Comparisons To The Great Depression Are Misleading

The economy tanked at the beginning of Hoover's term in office. The public gave him 3 years to fix it, and he dithered. They gave the House to Democrats in 1930, and the Presidency to FDR in 1932.

NOW is different. The economy tanked just at the transition point between the end of the term of Bush and the beginning of the term of Obama. Therefore, it seems the pubic will give BHO 2-4 years to fix the economy. But he, like Hoover, is dithering, using up the time on the clock while the people suffer.

Republicans THEN, though they had the time, could not provide a credible alternative to FDRs plan, but NOW they are able to bring forward a reasonable alternative to BHOs overreaching, and dithering. And there is also the difference that FDR was not burdened by a wildly Liberal Congress running wild on Gay Rights, and pandering to underclass minorities, labor unions, and on and on. FDR ran a pretty Centrist ship.

The public now is reacting to the whole extremely leftist socialist Democrat agenda that has been running from FDR to BHO.

A more apt comparison would be Jimmy Carter and BHO. They seem like peas out of the same pod and a similar result can be expected, namely ONE TERM for BHO.

I think republicans will continue to win congressional seats in 2012, and that Obama will win his reelection...Just like President Bush won his second term.....that I personally thought, there was no way in Heaven's name he would win his reelection....only to be so totally let down when he did....

1930 is a good parallel. The Republicans ran the economy into the toilet and created a global Depression. Their response at the time was Hoovers famous "Prosperity is just around the corner'....this time it was "The economy is fundamentally strong"

The end result was the Americans did not trust the GOP to run the country for the next 20 years

The Bush recession was the worst since 1930. Like 1932 the voters hounded the GOP out of office and the GOP will be hard pressed to get another President for the next 20 years

the economy is not strong right now, obamabot. by saying the economy is strong, you are committing the same sin you accuse the republicans of two years ago of committing.

I think RW was referring to McCain's comment as the entire global financial system was about to come crashing down. Everybody knows the economy won't be considered "strong" for several years. It took much longer than two years to get in this abysmal condition, and it will take at least as long climbing back up the hill. But we ARE on the way. And before anyone starts yelling, unemployment is the LAST measurement to get well in a sick economy.

Before the economy tanked, it was generally thought by most Americans that domestic problems had taken a back seat to foreign involvements, and it was high time to put our own house in order for a change (it's what ALL the polls indicated and obviously it was going to cost money to do that. But Obama won on that platform (and Clinton would have won on the similar platform). Then the priority became just propping up the weak economy AND trying to keep the spending on domestic priorities long forgotten.

Blanket comments like yours imply that Obama and the Democrats were simply hell bent on spending recklessly, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

Yes, quite remarkable, looking at the tri state area I am in, I see bankruptcies, home foreclosures on the rise worse than a year ago or so,I read in our local papers about how many are trying to make their mortgage, health insurance and day to day living expenses, many shop owners behind in their rental payments in malls etc, and then for some reason,nearby, rapid expansion of some businesses and new construction, who is left with enough money to support all these new and expanded businesses? Go figure, who is really making all the money? Cause it sure does not seem like it's the 'little guy'.

In a couple words just looking around, the economy SUCKS for most.
The news about how gr8 the economy is, coming out of Washington D.C. anymore is just plain old cow pies wrapped in 'happy paper'

So you want everything perfect again right now for everyone? Ain't gonna happen, my friend. However, as inch by inch the economy improves, people start opening their wallets a crack and spending again, which means they have confidence that the economy WILL bounce back eventually. And that kind of faith transcends to business owners who may not be so scared to take risks and start hiring again. A recession this bad will not be relieved any other way than by baby steps.
