Republicans have continually decried the Obama Administration’s “runaway spending” since he took office, blaming him for growing deficits and a mounting national debt. But a quick glance at the facts show that, compared to George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, Obama is actually embracing fiscal conservatism more than any other president in recent history, with the exception of fellow Democrat Bill Clinton.

The Atlantic crunches the numbers:

For all the talk you hear about Obama’s historic spree, government spending actually hasn’t increased so dramatically under this president. The stimulus was big, but it’s over. It’s been replaced by, if not austerity (which has struck our states and cities) then a hard correction to the center.

Evidence of the cost-cutting measures employed by Obama can be found in the last several jobs reports. While the overall number of jobs created has steadily increased for the last several months, those advances have all come entirely in the private sector. Public sector jobs have actually been on the decline for much of the last year as government spending on some agencies and programs have been cut.

Economics Professor Mark Thoma provides a helpful chart on his blog that puts President Obama’s per capita spending into context, comparing it with the spending of every president in the last 40 years.

That’s likely a hard pill to swallow for Obama’s critics, who have spent years hammering his administration for record spending and fiscal irresponsibility. The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson put it best: “Going by federal expenditures…it would seem that if Obama’s a socialist, Ronald Reagan is Karl Marx with an ICBM.”

You guys just don't quit with this story, do you? Is Obama more fiscally conservative? In terms of how much he's raised spending, mildly. In terms of how much he's spent total, not even close.

Don't piss on my hat and tell me, "It's Rainin'."

No quantity of accounting tricks can disguise the fact that the debt has risen faster under this AWOL in Chief than under any other President.

He has no plan and no budget and we have no hope as long as he's in there.

I understand Vancouver is not such a bad place to live and they will have that Keystone Pipeline replacement since the Dipstick in Chief wouldn't allow it to go through the Midwest.

Just trying to figure out where to move if the Big 0 gets four more years to complete the destruction of the country he started in the first term. When he has "more latitude" to make Vladimir's wet dream come true, we are all completely and truly screwed.

You are really late to the game because your chart was debunked over a month ago, dumb ass. They attributed 2009 spending to Bush instead of Obama.

That aside, what fucking difference does it really make? All of that massive debt spending was and still is grossly irresponsible. Is it your presumption that Obama's massive debt spending is ok because it's allegedly not as much (which isn't true) as Bush's massive debt spending? Either way we're going bankrupt, asshat.

Wake the fuck up.

It's not debunked, Neonuts want to push all of Bush's spending on Obama.

I love people like the OP who find some bullshit to state that. If true, you either hate Obama or like fiscal conservatism, so which is it?

I agree, that is the part I try and point out over and over but I get no responce. So is less spending good??? You can't do mass stimulus if you don't keep spending, so do you support stimulus or not?

And Gramps is right. If Obama didn't have the house slow spending we would be near a 2 Trillion dollar deficit a year.

Democrats put forward all sorts of bullshit, but this one really tops them all. Barack Obama a fiscal conservative, what a joke. And the lefties swallow it all, unbelievable.

The first year of any incoming president term is saddled—for better or for worse—with the budget set by the president whom immediately precedes the new occupant of the White House. Indeed, not only was the 2009 budget the property of George W. Bush—and passed by the 2008 Congress—it was in effect four months before Barack Obama took the oath of office.

That's not true for Obama though. 1. He voted for Bush's last budget, which was just a continuation of the 2008 budget. 2. Bush's last budget was only appropriated (funded) through March 6, 2009 (link).

Obama didn't vote for that by himself so I'm not sure what the first point is and for the second point there is a budget passed every year.

The 2012 budget was passed on December 11, 2011.

The 2010 budget was passed on April 3, 2009.

Every President comes into office with a first year budget that was passed the previous year. And Obama also had the bailouts passed by Bush as well adding to the deficit.

The point is that Obama voted for the 2008 and 2009 Bush budgets, so he supported that spending. Also, you are incorrect. EVERY President does not come into office with a first year budget that was passed the previous year. As my link shows, Obama only inherited six weeks of Bush's FY 2009 budget.

Oh and Bush's bailouts? Obama supported them too.

President-elect Barack Obama has teamed up with President George W. Bush for what could be the last major action of this presidency.

At Obama's request, Bush has agreed to ask Congress for the second $350 billion of the $700 billion financial bailout.

The move came shortly after Bush told reporters at this final scheduled news conference Monday morning that he would request the funds only if Obama asked — and that Obama hadn’t yet asked.

Obama has said he plans to seek substantial changes in the program to provide more transparency — information on how the money is spent — and to make more of it available for consumers, homeowners and small businesses.
