Obama May Veto His Tax Proposal if Not Granted Power to Raise Debt Ceiling
6 Dec 2012

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama indicated that having unlimited powers to raise the debt ceiling without Congress’s approval may be more important to him than raising taxes -- and he may veto his own tax hike proposal to take the country over the fiscal cliff if he does not get his ultimate wish.

Addressing corporate CEOs at the Business Roundtable, Obama said using the debt ceiling as leverage to get more spending cuts was a “bad strategy for America” and “it is a game I will not play.”

According to The Hill, Obama also told the business leaders that they “should not accept going through” another round of debt-ceiling negotiations like the one in 2011.

With a congress willing to put that gun to the head of America's economic standing in the world it's probably a good thing to take it away from them. It's like any kind of responsibility, misuse it and risk losing it.

Now that Maobama is no longer in congress he's doing everything he can to make it irrelevant. He ain't gonna get this one. Screw him!

Are you having doubts about our dear leader? Then why did 51% of the country vote for him? Obamaphones?

How much power are you willing to transfer from the legislative to the executive? Also, I'll ask the customary question of, would you feel the same way if a republican was in the White House?

hmmm Andrew Breitbarts website claims Obama wants "unlimited power"........ not sure where the words unlimited power came into play, Obama has stated however that he does not want fiscal cliff negotiations tied to an ability to raise the debt ceiling. which whether the GOP wants to admit it or not would need to be done simply due to interest on the debt even if there was a balanced budget.

Is it Congress as you claim? Why is Nancy Reid objecting to a Senate vote? Why does Maobama continue to move the goal post each time he speaks?

Reid Blocks Vote to Give Obama Unlimited Power to Raise Debt Ceiling

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) objected to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) proposal to take up President Barack Obama's request to have the unprecedented power to raise the debt ceiling without getting approval from Congress.

McConnell made the offer on the Senate floor a day after President Barack Obama indicated that he may veto his own tax hike proposals if the final fiscal cliff deal does not give him the unilateral power to raise the debt ceiling. Obama said he did not want "to play that game" where Republicans demand spending cuts to give Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling.

McConnell said that Obama "has been saying all he wants is to raise taxes on the top two percent so he can tackle the debt and the deficit," but now Obama "finally revealed that’s not really his true intent."

"By demanding the power to raise the debt limit whenever he wants by as much as he wants, he showed what he’s really after is assuming unprecedented power to spend taxpayer dollars without any limit," McConnell said.

McConnell said Republicans will not give Obama such powers.

“I assure you: it’s not going to happen," McConnell said. "The American people want Washington to get spending under control. And the debt limit is the best tool we have to make the President take that demand seriously."

McConnell noted that on Wednesday, Reid blocked McConnell's amendment to a bill that would have forced a Senate floor vote on Obama's proposal to avert the fiscal cliff. Reid did so because the Democrats do not support Obama's initial offer, which included $1.6 trillion in new tax increases, a new round of stimulus projects, and unilateral power for the president to raise the debt ceiling without Congressional approval.

The President doesn't even really need Congress to authorized a debt ceiling increase. Congress has already mandated a level of spending that requires the limit to be raised, thus to NOT raise the limit and fail to spend as Congress has already directed would be a violation of the law.

Even Dems have wised up to this asshole. If one person has the power to raise the debt ceiling at will, why bother having one at all?
I hope Obama sticks with it and we go over the cliff. Recall this is the cliff Obama and the Democrats bargained for. So they own the results.

Raising the debt ceiling to infinity doesn't do anything to change our debt levels unless Congress actually authorizes more spending.

Interesting attempt at being logical. Care to point out what part of the law actually requires Congress to keep paying for anything other than debt already incurred?

That's the plan. Obama wants to raise everyone's taxes. Obama's ridiculous proposal of last week delivered to Boehner by Geithner--he knew from the get-go--that there was no way in hell Republicans would agree to giving him power over the only credit card--nor would they just raise taxes without the "cough-cough" the balanced approach--meaning spending cuts that Obama campaigned on. Obama added more spending to his proposal than he did cuts.

OBAMA WANTS US TO GO OVER THE FISCAL CLIFF-- don't you get it yet? He just wants to make certain that when it happens that he can blame Republicans for not accepting his plan--when he can't even get democrats to vote for it. Harry Reid refuses to bring Obama's proposal to the floor for a vote--because he knows there is no way in hell it would get a vote.

They voted for it--and they're going to get it--LOL Just sit back and let it happen. The good news is--the Fiscal Cliff will hit 90% of the Obama sheeple first--as it will be they that are most affected by it.

It's a moot point because democrats would have never held such a thing as the debt ceiling hostage, republicans either before the teapublicans joined congress and felt empowered to use terrorist tactics to get what they wanted. As a debt reduction measure it is an abject failure, as a political weapon it is much like a ABomb in that it is too potentially devastating to the country at large to leave in the hands of people would use it as a first strike.

Never? Are you sure about that?
