If the Bush tax cuts for people making over 200,000 expire, a person making 250,000 dollars a year will owe less than 300 dollars more than they did last year.

A person making 250k a year at 35 percent will pay approx 87K in taxes, with no withholdings. Of course that all changes with amount of dependents, write offs etc. A person making 250k a year at 39.6 percent will pay approx 98k in taxes. It will be substantially more than 300 bucks. And of course the AMT comes in to kick your ass too.

One more Conservative who doesn't understand marginal tax rates.

I'm not an accountant but I have built up two companies and sold them. I'm very aware of where the money is going, costs, corporate taxes, labor, and so on. This isn't some fictional outlay into the academia world of theoretical axioms. This is real life that affects people.

Thanks, and again Im not an accountant but these were some of the numbers on my particular account that my accountant and I were discussing. The increases from this year to next were pretty substantial.

The lame duck session should start in late November with tax cuts at the top of the agenda. Although it seems unlikely, Republicans might be able to block the tax cuts in an effort to force Democrats to give the cuts to wealth, in which case everybody's taxes will go up.
