Interesting write-up in the Washington Examiner noting the clear trend of Independent voters away from Obama - the single largest voting group in the country...

Excerpt:

Independent voters are turning away from President Obama and his fellow Democrats in droves. And if they can't find a way to get them back, the party could be in deep trouble for 2010 and beyond.

Independents gave Obama the White House last year with a vote for pragmatic competence. They have been repaid with partisanship and dithering. And unlike liberals who Obama has quickly re-energized after their summer doldrums, independents are devilishly hard to win back once they lose faith.

The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, the Rolls-Royce of public surveys, showed that for the first time, independents disapproved of the president's performance, 46 percent to 41 percent...

Now, Obama is ignoring the desperate-sounding pleas of his hand-picked commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for more troops.

We hear that Obama is waiting to see what happens next before deciding to continue with his own strategy of an Afghan surge. His team is reading a book about how the Kennedy administration was led astray by the military and holding a series of meetings about the way forward.

A flip-flop on what Obama called a "war of necessity" just last might well send the independents to the exits for good.

And to think that we have another 3+ years of him makes me nauseated, another 1/5 + million lost their jobs this week, with no job gains in sight, down right depressing for the unemployed.

How's that hope and change working out for you libs??????????????

Ah, but there were less jobs lost than projected! That is the spin of the day.

The economy is lumbering back into some form of recovery, but the recovery will prove far less stable, and far more shallow, under the financial and legislative chaos that has marked the Obama administration's first year. He has taken the worst aspects of Bush's fiscal irresponsibility and doubled down on it - literaly!!

It was in play the day after the 2008 election.

Nothing in US politics ever stays unchanged.

Exactly.

Besides, this is Obama vs nobody. Throw someone like your precious Sarah Palin in there Sinatra, see how fast the Independents scramble back to Obama's side.

The article concerns 2010 - not 2012.

Point of reference pard...

I appreciate the attempt at humor!

That being said, the significant loss of Independents is troubling for this White House.

2010 appears very much in play - a dramatic departure from projections earlier in the year...

2010 is definitely in play...

Alot can happen in one year. What we think are the major issues today (economy, healthcare) may not be major issues a year from now.

To the Democrats advantage, they get to run against republicans who are still disorganized and lack a coherent strategy.

As you say, a lot can happen in a year. That includes teh GOP getting its act together.

The bloom is off the rose. Fortunately the Democrats are so out of touch (remember Pelosi holding up the astroturf?) they won't know what hit them until after the election.

Yea, I'm not even sure 2010 is lost for Democrats. I still think a lot of people, George Will type republicans, you know, the intelligent ones that know they are screwing all the poor and middle class republicans, will vote against Obama.

Seriously though, until I see someone that can appeal to more than that core 20 percent of racists within your party, like John McCain used to be before he changed most of his positions and ended up looking like a lame liar during the campaign, someone who can actually get independent votes, you know, from people who don't want to appear to be one of the childish idiots at these town halls, then I'm not worried.

Hell, I thought there was no fucking way Bush would get elected again in 2004, but we see what happened, that fool went in again. So, there is no accounting for taste, or mental deficit. But the right-wing makes the mistake of thinking that since they think in a certain way, that "America" thinks in a certain way. Fantastically, that isn't true. Politicians and FAUX anchors who say "America thinks this and that," are doing the same thing as people who use the pronouns we, our, us, they, them, and their. They use them in hopes of snaring a few folks who think they are included in the pronoun, when actually they aren't.

I'm still waiting to see what the republicans will hold up as an alternative.

Right now, they have no message and no candidates who can appeal to those independent voters. Running the same platform that lost the last two elections is not the answer

Why do you need to know so bad right now? So you could repeat what you did to Tom Delay?

Do you mean the Liberals forced him to be on Dancing with the Stars??

Those Bastards!

Yep. Rovian tactics and fear aren't likely to bring Independents around, and without them, you lose.

If the GOP can find a message to turn independents back to their side, they'll win. Unfortunately, striking the same tone as talk radio isn't that message.

Here is what the republicans have to offer independent voters right now..
  • teabaggers
  • Rush Limbaugh
  • armed protesters outside of political meetings
  • Glen Beck
  • protesters screaming down opposition at Town Halls
  • Bill O'Reilly
  • canditates screaming about Death Panels
  • Ann Coulter
  • rants about the impending crash of the economy
  • Sara Palin

Ann and Sarah are the top of the list. Ann is on record as calling moderates stupid, and lacking even the intelligence of a toaster. That's sure to bring in the independents.

Sarah couldn't even keep Indiana in play for McCain, as Red a state as you can get outside of the South.

If this is the best they have, Obama will walk to a re-election in 2012.

Keep talking, boys. Reassure yourselves that it's really so.

Meanwhile the GOP is going steadily up in the polls as the Dems are unmasked as the cynical turds they really are.

Who are your candidates?
What are they running on?

Why would an independent want to support this crap?

Keep beating it, son. Sit back and tell yourself there's nothing to worry from the GOP. Right up til after election day.
