Shellacked at home, shellacked abroad. President Obama's Asia trip is extending a losing streak with the latest setback - a refusal by other major financial powers to follow his lead to revive the global economy.

The president's nostrums, which began with a call for stimulus-style pump priming by other nations, had evolved into a plan to ease wild swings in currency values and overboard trade imbalances. But he got next to nothing in showdown meetings with other leaders of the G-20 nations, or major economic powers. U.S. leadership, once taken for granted, has all but vanished, and no one's in charge.

The trip began with sunny triumphs for Obama. He paid tribute to India, an ally in the making, and visited Indonesia, where he spent several childhood years. He's cultivating the two nations as bulwarks against Chinese expansion and entry points into the financial dynamo of Asia.

The trouble began when he landed in Korea. Revisions to a free-trade treaty between Seoul and Washington fell apart over car and beef exports to Korea. The setback kills chances of similar agreements that can spur overseas trade to restart the economy. The mighty United States, abetted by Obama's considerable charm, couldn't crack Korea's stubborn resistance to American exports.

A more profound dispute followed at the G-20 gathering. The president pitched other countries to hold down trade imbalances and avoid the temptations of tweaking currency rates to gain advantage in a sickly global marketplace. This argument took aim at China, which keeps its currency cheap to encourage exports, and Germany, which does much the same.

I hear your frustration. Insanity is abound, it seems, and it has enshrouded us all, to the point where, I question my own beliefs because I have no TV, no outside perspective on Obama or politics, pretty much except for what I hear in here. I had actually developed a picture of Obama being a complete failure because of all the talk in here. I guess I can understand how easy it is to fall pretty to these beliefs, just imagine if you lived in a town where everybody said these things, including your own family. These right wing neo-con beliefs are tempting in a way, because they are so hate fulled, so ignorant, so blaming, and feed the ego so well, but I refuse, because I know I'd be a weaker, and dumber person for believing them.
