Obama has to Learn to STFU

how has the president squelched las vegas? specifics please.

You can’t get corporate jets. You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime, ” President Barack Obama said to a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind. last week.

But the remark caused a hailstorm of anger from Las Vegas officials, members of the travel industry and even residents. And now the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority will launch a six-figure campaign with ads in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and other publications featuring company testimonials.

“People are telling me that they’re not coming to Las Vegas because the president doesn’t want them to,” Mayor Oscar B. Goodman told the New York Times. Goodman at first demanded an apology from the White House, but later said he would settle for a clarification. “When you make a casual, although not malevolent remark, it can have ramifications which affect the industry as well as all of the citizens who live in southern Nevada,” he told the Associated Press.

Yet it's okay for Obama to go to NYC and Hawaii on the taxpayer's dime, and for Nancy Pelosi to commandeer a jet filled with top shell liquor on the taxpayer's dime.

As the OP title says "Obama has to learn to STFU".

Weak, weak, weak. Tell us how the GOP squandered the taxpayers' dime many times over compared to the Dems the last few years. Hypocrite. Tu quoque is fair when you accuse one side while ignoring the other. Condemn both, then you are right.

I am not a big fan of Vegas. I was last there in 1996. I don't like gambling, and I hate the casinos.

But a lot of people do. And it is inappropriate for Obama to talk down a portion of the economy.

Here is Steve Wynn, CEO of Wynn Resorts, a casino operator in Las Vegas.

Bullshit.

Corporate events have been down for at least three years if not longer. LV's problems are not the fault of Obama.

No doubt Vegas started to tank before Obama became President, but I'll take Wynn at his word that board chairmen are telling him that they are staying away because of the political environment. Wynn has a reputation as being outspoken. I see no reason to disbelieve him.
Of course you are free to believe as you wish. He's named no names which is suspicious and as I know a little about the convention industry I know corporations have been cutting back on their events for several years...Vegas suffers because it is expensive, not because of something Obama said.

Sounds more like political sour grapes on his part than anything else.

But not on Obama's part? Just Wynn, right?

Well, whether he should have said that people ON THE TAX PAYER'S DIME should not be going to vegas on OUR DIME or not for whatever PC reason...

I agree with oBAMA....

THEY SHOULD NOT BE GOING TO VEGAS OR WHERE EVER ON OUR DIME.

And Obama is absolutely right to tell corporates to stay away if they are struggling financially.

I think people are reading way too much into what Obama is saying. Sounds like he saying that if you are on Struggle St maybe gambling isn't the best remedy. Quite a reasonable and responsible thing to say IMO...

no, i don't think that is what obama said.....

he said if you are ON THE TAX PAYER'S DIME....if you got bailed out by us tax payers, you should NOT be using tax payer's money for an elaborate, souped up, sales meeting in vegas.

Other companies that did not get bailed out were not mentioned....they can do as they please....whether they are struggling or not.

I understand the fact that struggling companies, whether accepting of funds from government or not, should be more wary of how they spend their funds. It's common sense, and we all know when companies lose money the top doesn't suffer cutbacks on luxuries which he is attempting to curb with such statements. I can't say I disagree with him on that part. Where I do disagree with him, was the second time he mentioned the gambling Mecca:

"This isn't how responsible families do their budgets. When times are tough, you tighten your belts," he said, "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices. And it's time your government did the same."

He could have mentioned any big resort or tourist area in the country and he intentionally chose Vegas. Because the political winds are not blowing with him there? SOUR GRAPES as Ravi would say? Why not mention Disney? I don't blame Vegas for being upset.

"Vegas" has become synonymous with gambling, just like "Kleenex" has become synonymous with facial tissue.

Do big corporations really go to disney for their Sales meetings? We went to vegas, colorado springs and scottsdale arizona for our sales meetings or market....all at 5 star resorts....could drink what we wanted, could eat what we wanted, could go to the spa, we could go to vegas shows, all on the "company"....Disney does not seem very adult like or fun! :D

Obama is RIGHT about all of this, but he probably SHOULD HAVE BEEN more "generic" in his comments, and not just used his example of vegas.

Vegas is suffering because they have been built around entertainment and gambling.

Someone should point out to Steve Wynne that in a severe recession, people should be spending their available money on the mortgage, childrens education and taking care of their families first.

Wait.......Obama already did point that out

Typical irrelevant nonsense from those who need to blame others, and typical negative remarks about our president from the wingnuts on the right whose policies did nothing but fail. Atlantic City is suffering the same fate as Vegas, and I didn't hear it used as a metaphor for gambling. Gamblers don't care about what you say, they are gamblers. Walk through the casinos sometime and witness the blank intense stare of the poker player or slot machine dreamer. We have high roller friends and they'd gamble if Father Gawd appeared on a cloud and told them not to - but they have money and can. My father bet the ponies and the numbers even as we went to school dressed in the neighbors hand me downs. When people can they gamble - when they want shows they go to shows - wake up and smell the coffee.

Right, the fact that he is President means he should be more careful with his wording. He knows this and his speechwriters know this. There's no way the second mention of Vegas was unintentional. Because a certain area is more likely to vote against you as a politician does not give you the right to slam them. Especially the President....ANY POTUS, not just Obama.
