Obama feels pressured?

"However, administration officials said that amid rising violence and casualties, polls that show a majority of Americans now think the war in Afghanistan isn't worth fighting. With tough battles ahead on health care, the budget and other issues, Vice President Joe Biden and other officials are increasingly anxious about how the American public would respond to sending additional troops."

Pentagon worried about Obama's commitment to Afghanistan - Yahoo! News

This is just sad. This administration seems more concerned with polls than either safeguarding our troops or finishing this mission.

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the Obama administration inherited an under-resourced war in Afghanistan , but he stopped short of promising more troops.

When all else fails ... start pointing the blame.

The assessment also calls for more U.S. government civilians to be sent to Afghanistan and for the streamlining of the military's command structure, saying that too much bureaucracy is making it difficult for commanders to make decisions on the ground.

Send the civilian work force for on the job training!!

Yes, Bush was in charge of the War in Afghanistan for 7 years and he did so well, our troops are being murdered by the dozens and the Taliban are capturing towns and cities. GOOD WORK DUBYAH!

Hate to break it to ya dumb ass but Bush hasn't been in office for 9 months. That was more then enough time for you assholes to claim 9/11 was all his fault, so guess what? Any problem NOW in Afghanistan is Obama's fault. Sound fair enough dumb ass?

Anything that happens NOW in A-Stan being Obama's fault for 9/11 being all Bush's fault?

Sold.

When it comes to war the majority of Americans are always wrong.

Shut up and eat your apple pie.

Humble pie will come latter.

Uh, no because the problems NOW are the direct result of Bush's incompetence.

Oh yes, yes -- excellent idea. Just keep fighting the war, stop asking questions and we'll win it in the long run. Who else had that strategy... or that's right... BUSH with Iraq!

Why are we in Afghanistan again? What is our goal? How do we know when we've achieved our goal?

The answers: Because we are, there is none and we don't.

Fantastic strategy employed by our top military commanders! Really, now. It's time to bring our troops home. Keep a small force there of NATO and UN peacekeepers which consists of 10,000 or so US troops along with Drones, but that's it.

President Obama made the decision to continue the war and to KEEP the generals. After 9 months this is HIS not Bush's. You people are about as sharp as a redwood.

I think he needs to put in about 400,000 troops which is what the experts are saying it will take, to get control of afghanistan

OR

He needs to bring the troops home....the American people are the ones through their representatives that are suppose to vote for war and according to our constitution it should take 2/3 of the Senate and the House voting yes, for war to take place and I seriously doubt that 2/3's of the USA would be willing to send the amount of troops we need, the 300,000-400,000, to accomplish our goal...

Bring the troops home, NOW. these deaths are unnecessary deaths that will have NOTHING to show for them when all said and done UNLESS we send in the amount of military we really NEED.

Care

Where in hell did you get 300 to 400 thousand? The Current Generals think maybe 44000 more. Not 300 thousand more. You guys amaze me when you just make numbers up.

BUT the war is Obama's now, and has been since Jan 21st. If all the mistakes Clinton made that lead up to 9/11 were dumped on Bush cause he was President, then Obama owns Afghanistan now.

Had nothing at all to do with the shit stain changing command?
For the 7-9 months could something have been done differently?
Why is it the past few months are the deadliest?

you can google 400,000 troops Afghanistan and come up with several articles.

Commander: 400,000 Troops Needed in Afghanistan

No, that's not a typo. The outgoing US commander of NATO troops in Afghanistan says it would require 400,000 troops to secure that country. >ISAF Commander McNeill has said himself that according to the current counterterrorism doctrine, it would take 400,000 troops to pacify Afghanistan in the long term. But the reality is that he has only 47,000 soldiers under his command, together with another 18,000 troops fighting at their sides as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and possibly another 75,000 reasonably well-trained soldiers in the Afghan army by the end of the year. All told, there is still a shortfall of 260,000 men.

So, if we listen to those that were in charge and on the front line, then we need 400,000 troops to do the task at hand...and I KNOW the American people WILL NOT go for the 400k so we need to stop allowing our troops to be killed FOR NOTHING, and bring them home.

Care

I wish they would've listened to those,.."that were in charge and on the front line", in Dec of '01, and we'd have OBL either dead or in custody(likely dead), and we could've been out of there. Of course I'm assuming that getting OBL was the real objective.
Bush and Cheney really fucked that up, imo, by pulling Delta Force back when they had him in their sights, and relying on the Muji to do it for political reasons.

Now that we're there though, and stuck in this "quagmire", with what looks like a deteriorating situation, I agree that we need to give them whatever number of troops and support they need, or get the fuck out and deal with the backlash.

And now it is becoming more clear. The cowardly left will likely cut and run at the earliest opportunity. There just isn't enough "support" for these politicians to make a decision.
Well yes, the left makes it decisions based on polls. They always have. It's more important to them to win a popularity contest than it is to make hard decisions.

But we don't need to be in Afghanistan any more.

We do need to watch Pakistan closely as they have nukes and we can't have them falling into the hands of lunatic fringe zealots.
