More energy production here in this country would bring in billions of dollars to state and federal governments and would also put 100s of thousands of people to work and lower gas prices. Obama doesn't care about these workers...

Seahawk becomes first Gulf of Mexico drilling company to file bankruptcy due to offshore drilling moratorium

The first off-shore drilling company in the Gulf of Mexico to declare bankruptcy has blamed the government-imposed standstill for a shortage of shallow-water permits following the summer’s massive oil spill. Texas-based Seahawk Drilling, the second-largest shallow-water driller operating in the Gulf, announced it had filed for bankruptcy Friday and would be selling its remaining assets to Hercules Offshore.

The asset sale through Chapter 11 is valued at $105 million.

According to the press release announcing the sale, the company’s liquidity and revenue stream “have been adversely affected by the dramatic slowdown in the issuing of shallow-water permits in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico following the Macondo well blowout.”

Chief Executive Randy Stilley said that while the outcome is best for the company’s stakeholders, “I think it is important to note that Seahawk was forced to seek strategic alternatives only after an unprecedented decline in the issuance of offshore drilling permits following the Macondo blowout.”

Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana called the bankruptcy an “economic nightmare.”

“I have repeatedly said that the administration’s excruciatingly slow release of oil and gas permits will cause job losses,” Landrieu said in a statement. “How many more rigs have to leave and how many more businesses have to close before it realizes the havoc the de facto moratorium is wrecking on the Gulf Coast?”

Energy Secretary Chu Wants Higher Energy Prices

Energy Secretary Steven Chu appeared on Fox News Sunday with host Chris Wallace last weekend. Wallace asked him about his desire in 2008 for Americans to punitively pay more at the pump in order to wean them off of gasoline. Shockingly, Chu did not walk back his comments as he has attempted to do in the past. In fact, he embraced the strategy noting that his focus is to ease the pain felt by his energy policies by forcing automakers to make more fuel-efficient automobiles:

WALLACE: In that regard, in 2008 you supported ramping up gas prices to coax Americans into more green energy cars and other uses, being more fuel efficient. You said this — and let’s put it on the screen — “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” Where it is now more than $10 a gallon. In that sense, is the gas spike an opportunity for more green energy?

CHU: Well, what I said — what I’m doing since I became secretary of Energy has been quite clear. What I have been doing is developing methods to take the pain out of high gas prices.

We have been very focused in the Department of Energy on that. And, in fact, the entire administration has been very focused on that.

So, the increasing of the mileage standards is one way of doing this. A very concerted effort in electric vehicles, where we think within reach, within maybe four or five years, we could be testing batteries that can allow us to go 200, 300 miles on a single charge in a mass-marketed car.

WALLACE: I understand all that, and that is certainly part of your effort. But is the spike in gas prices — does that also help in making us more energy-efficient?

CHU: Well, the recent spike in gasoline prices following that huge spike in 2007, 2008 is a reminder to Americans that the price of gasoline over the long haul should be expected to go up just because of supply and demand issues. And so we see this in the buying habits of Americans as they make choices for the next car they buy.

Worker pay taxes and Obama likes worker who don't pay they are dependent on the system for help a lot of them can be bought.. One interesting exception is the 18% who are union. They have already be bought and at a very high price I might add.

Don't worry Obama the benevolent wants whats best for us... We'll get used to it.:doubt:

Conservatives are against ALL workers. They only care about the wealthy. Because they are still under the belief that "Trickle Down" works.

The Corporate & Banking Community loves Conservatives.. because they give them much power to do what the hell they want.. including ruining the country(then asking for bailouts from guess who? Their hated enemy The Public Sector)... then they repay the taxpayers that bailed their asses out by doing the same Casino tactics that got them into trouble in the first place.

Yeah... they're worthy of the "working people's" trust. They'd lay off 10,000 workers and walk over their mothers to save a buck.

Yeah... they're worthy of the "working people's" trust. They'd lay off 10,000 workers and walk over their mothers to save a buck.

Wasn't it Bush who put 30% tariffs on steel imports to protect that industry from international dumping? It was ruining domestic markets and killing jobs.

While Clinton was President, crude oil hit $10/barrel. Thousands of companies went belly-up and hundreds of thousands lost their jobs.

He did not a fucking thing about it.

Who's a communist? Fascist, racist pig. Hey, how does it feel to be stereotyped with ignorance and hatred?

Most conservatives are middle class.... For now. In one way, I hope you get your way in these things and you will see how much those beloved businessmen of yours love you back.

Lunatic Tantrum... I guess speaking the truth makes you uncomfortable. The point of the whole thread was to play "gotcha" with Progressives. So I played "gotcha" right back.

hey... If the auto Industry goes to electric vehicles, oil jobs will suffer. If Corporations keep importing jobs for $1/hr... all jobs suffer. Which is worse?

Why does the right suddenly pretend to care about workers and jobs? They care about "corporate welfare" and bible-ism. When they are not hating the gays, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics and trying to slash women's rights, that is.
