Obama did good killing NASA Manned space flight

US manned spaceflight from beginning to end is an exercise in positive propaganda that no longer has the power to capture the attention of the public. If manned space flight is to have a place in the world it has to be for more than just a way for nations to show-off. They have to find the practical commercial side of it or drop it. It pains me to say that having grown up in the midst of the Apollo program but it's the hard truth, manned spaceflight must become a paying venture to survive.

But it is!

Right now, Virgin Galactic is like the Wright Brothers first flight. In 25 years...well, that's the whole point, who the hell knows how far we can take it

Exactly, I don't think the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos , and Paul Allen would be in this because they just thought it was cool. While I am sure they love the aspects of Space Flight as the rest of us, they all see the long term commercial benefits of it.

No matter how hard Obama tries to destroy everything good about this country, with God's help, we find a way to make it better.

I was livid when he turned NASA into a Global Warming Advocacy group, Muslim outreach center and killed the Manned Space program in the process. GSA continues on to Vegas, Department of Education continues to breed idiots, but a source of American pride and innovation gets cancelled.

But, as happens with Free Enterprise, talented entrepreneurs have rushed in to fill the void.

They are building rockets capable of suborbital flight at 1/5 (20%) (not a typo) of the NASA cost.

They have hundreds of wealthy people lined up to take a flight into space, that's how Free Enterprise works and works best. They will continue collapsing the costs until we can finally launch our Liberals into space for the cost of a Venti Caramel Macchiato.

Welcome | Virgin Galactic

In a related note, 9 full months after the last space shuttle launch, only now is NASA firing 9% of the work force associated with that effort.
Actually St Ronnie and GHW Bush had already turned NASA into a "Muslim outreach center" in 1985 with not a single complaint from the CON$ervoFascists!

Payload Specialist Astronaut Bio: Sultan Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud
In 1985 he flew as a Payload Specialist on STS-51G Discovery (June 17-24, 1985). As one of a seven member international crew, which also included American and French astronauts, he represented the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (ARABSAT) in deploying their satellite, ARABSAT-1B.

wtf does his being a Muslim have to do with anything? He was a payload specialist, deploying a freaking satellite! It was a typical shuttle mission, not a 'muslim oureach'.

you're a moron.

Not according to Right-winger Debbie Schussel!!!

Reagan/Bush Used NASA for Muslim Outreach Before Obama

There were exhibits all over the Cap Center party honoring Prince Sultan’s space trip. And, at the time, everyone in the U.S. space program knew what a joke it was, what an obvious sop to the Saudis, given that the Prince didn’t have an iota of the years of training and skill it takes to become an American astronaut. He had the title of “payload specialist,” but the only payload for which he was actually skilled was “pay the lady.” Only months earlier, the Prince was the acting Saudi Information Minister and had zero space knowledge.

Everyone knew that this was a PR stunt that was outreach to Muslims in the form of fulfilling this spoiled Saudi Prince’s only unfulfilled Walter Mitty fantasy, courtesy of the Bush family that feted these people for decades. The real American astronauts laughed that the pretentious Prince Sultan insisted on wearing his Islamofascist get-up for the group picture of the STS-51-G Space Shuttle Discovery crew, yet he dressed in space gear for his individual shot. At the time, Sultan was the youngest person to fly in a space shuttle and not because he earned it. Even worse, U.S. taxpayer dollars helped finance Sultan’s launch and deployment of the Arab Satellite Communications Organization’s ARABSAT-1B satellite in space, the ostensible reason Sultan was aboard the flight. Yes, the Saudis supposedly paid a token amount. But it didn’t cover the overwhelming costs incurred. And that’s not the point.

I hate Obama, but i'm confused as to how cutting gov't spending in one area and that same area being handled better by a private company is a bad thing to anyone who would consider him or herself a small gov't fiscal conservative.

Now of course Obama makes up for it ten fold by wildly increasing spending everywhere else, but i still can't see how these NASA cuts are a negative.

They're good cuts as it turns out.

I'd like to see private enterprise launch ships to the Moon and planets too.

The surface of the Moon is chock full of rare elements that might be commercially harvested and send back to Earth using something like the sled Asimov and other science fiction writers proposed "back in the day"
"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" anyone?

Probably my favorite Robert E Heinlein book!!!

I loved Heinlein and Asimov.

I got to see Asimov speak at NYU and have his autograph, I think on "Foundation"

Private companies building replacements to resupply the ISS and gettign us back to the moon is good and all, but what about long-term manned flights elsewhere...say outside our solar system?

Perfect and great post!!

Comes with the territory. NASA didn't build a thing persey...but went for bid to the private sector to accomplish the goals. Private sector HAS the knowhow to get it done.

This is very possibly one of the WORST aspects of this administration for me. I cannot believe, for the very first time in my life, that the United States of America is not actively pursuing manned space flight. The fact that there are private companies who are willing to do it, just barely makes up for the disappointment and anger.

Barry and his cronies have placed this nation IN DANGER. Like the liberals that they are, they are hell bent on cutting and systematically dismantling the defense of this nation and it's manned space flight program as well.

Talk about a legacy... corruption, cronyism, and criminal neglect...

Well, I hate to break it to you, but the US Army has also eliminated Mounted Calvary.

Now, if we could just phase out the USPS, AMTRAK, the DOE (Energy and Education), and the IRS.

I've come to hate both those authors. Never liked Asimov's writing style beyond short fiction, though he was an editor par excellance. Heinlein I started to hate after I learned parts of his personal life and philosophy after reading "Stranger in a Strange Land". Although I begrudgingly like "Glory Road" and "The Puppetmasters".

How about we seriously clean house and end every Executive branch department made after 1951? (That last one was the Dept. of Transportation).

You realize how much money would be saved??? That's like 12 cabinet positions and many multiple more agencies.

Wrong again, as usual.

GWB ended manned space flight, not Obama:

Many falsehoods and misconceptions are being circulated around the Space Coast in the wake of the Obama Administration's release of its proposed 2011 NASA budget.

One common fallacy I've seen and heard is that "Obama cancelled the Space Shuttle."

No, he didn't.

The Bush Administration cancelled the Space Shuttle program in the wake of the Columbia accident.

Space KSC: Why Bush Cancelled the Space Shuttle

And plans for the next phase of manned space flight are already well under way:

In May 2011, NASA approved the Orion-based reference vehicle design, as outlined in NASA’s January 2011 report to Congress, as the Agency’s Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV). Orion maps well to the scope of the MPCV requirements outlined in the NASA Authorization Act of 2010, and it was already being built to meet the requirements of a deep-space vehicle under a contractual partnership with Lockheed Martin Corporation.

On September 14, 2011, the Administrator selected the design of the new launch vehicle. The Space Launch System (SLS) design closely follows the requirements laid out in the NASA Authorization Act of 2010 and will take NASA’s astronauts farther into space than ever before, create high-quality jobs here at home, and provide the cornerstone for America’s future human deep space exploration efforts. The vehicle’s early flights will be capable of lifting 70 metric tons before evolving to a lift capacity of 130 metric tons.

But don’t let the facts interfere with rightist dogma.
