Obama: Country needs economic stimulus plan

During the depression they invested in infrastruture spending to get people back to work. They invested in the future strength of this country and it paid off.
That's all fine and good, but in those days, there weren't a bunch of pork-project loving bureaucrats in Congress (maybe there were, but they were very few). I support spending money on our infrastucture, but not if it's going to be wasted on a museum dedicated to the history of bugs or something equally worthless. There needs to be oversight. And i mean real oversight, not the same crap we've seen with the Bank Bailout Boondoggle.

every reputable economist in the country disagrees with you....what does that say to you? that you're an idiot or they are?

A bridge is much more useful than a missle that's for sure.

True, a bridge is more useful. But has the same negative effects on the economy. Rather than allowing those jobs produce more marketable and profitable items that we can export overseas, we'll repair bridges? Not to mention, we simply don't have the money unless we borrow it or print it. It's like a person who just lost his job that decides to take out a loan to remodel his kitchen. It's sillyness. My 5 year old little brother can do better math than these idiots in power.

At least he can blame it on Bush.

For a while yet. Pretty soon, we'll have to blame it on Obama.

What this country needs is jobs, real jobs that pay real wages that people can really live on for producing real goods that people really need and are willing to buy with the wages from those jobs.

Can government accomplish that?

Further, this nation needs fewer people who are willing to live off of the labor of others, soaking up more and more of the real wages paid to people who do real work.

Can the government accomplish that?

What we need are real, tangible goods produced by wage earners to sell overseas to countries that have things we need and can't produce at home. you know, like oil for example.

We could just pay 20% of the unemployed people to cut down forests. Wood is a valuable resource, you can build houses with it, heat yourself with it, use it as a toothpick.
We can pay the other 80% of unemployed people to plant forests. Young vigorous forests remove global warming CO2 that burning fossil fuels causes. (Carbon Credits anyone?)
It's a win-win-win situation.
Housing, 100% employment and global warming offset.

every reputable economist in the country disagrees with you...

not true, the Austrian Schoolers, most notably Peter Schiff, have been all over CNBC and the WSJ lately, and are diehard opponents to the stimulus plan

economy will come back because low interest rates and lower gas prices are putting more $ in people's pockets than any GOP tax cut or Dem spending bill ever would

Jimmy Carter's gotta be dancin' in the streets seeing another President post such a dismal economic record. Obama can implement a tax on toilet flushing, and he'll still preside over greater private sector job creation that we've had with his idiocy.

The "stimulus" is not going to have any more effect than the last one. Americans are in a major credit reduction and saving's binge now. Any direct stimulus will simply be used to pay off credit. Jobs stimulus on infrastructure will have a small positive effect, for a short period, once it ramps up, but as soon as the projects are done, it is gone. And any federal jobs program extracts resources from the private sector, as someone has to pay for them, usually people who would eventually hire people themselves.

Starting a $2+ trillion war is usually not a good idea. :eusa_shhh:

"Economists from across the political spectrum agree that if we don't act swiftly and boldly, we could see a much deeper economic downturn that could lead to double-digit unemployment and the American dream slipping further and further out of reach," Obama said.

What crap. He's building up the scare tactics because he's losing support among his own party for the plan, and the tax cut piece is only in there to win GOP fence sitters, even though many think that's a bad idea because of the deficit.

Not impressed with this 1st attempt to get major legislation through, he's showing no tact and little principle. Really surprised Axelrod isn't giving him better advice. Maybe Obama will learn from this mistake like Clinton did from Hillarycare.
