Russia Claims ISIS Now On The Ropes

One question that’s been asked repeatedly over the past thirteen months is why Washington has been unable to achieve the Pentagon’s stated goal of “degrading and defeating” ISIS despite the fact that the “battle” pits the most advanced air force on the planet against what amounts to a ragtag band of militants running around the desert in basketball shoes.

Those of a skeptical persuasion have been inclined to suggest that perhaps the US isn’t fully committed to the fight. Explanations for that suggestion range from the mainstream (the White House is loathe to get the US into another Mid-East war) to the “conspiratorial” (the CIA created ISIS and thus doesn’t want to destroy the group due to its value as a strategic asset).

The implication in all of this is that a modern army that was truly determined to destroy the group could likely do so in a matter of months if not weeks and so once Russia began flying sorties from Latakia, the world was anxious to see just how long the various rebel groups operating in Syria could hold up under bombardment by the Russian air force.

The answer, apparently, is “less than a week.”

On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defense said it has conducted 60 bombing runs in 72 hours, hitting more than 50 ISIS targets.

According to the ministry (Facebook page is here), Islamic State fighters are in a state of “panic” and more than 600 have deserted.

Here's what happens when the Russians locate a terrorist "command center":

According to The Kremlin, the structure shown in the video is (or, more appropriately, "was") "an ISIS hardened command centre near Raqqah." Su-34s hit it with concrete-piercing BETAB-500s setting off a series of explosions and fires that "completely destroyed the object."

Here's RT:

Surgical airstrikes by Russian fighter jets have knocked out a number of Islamic State installations in Syria, including the battle headquarters of a jihadist group near Raqqa, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Over the past 24 hours, Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M fighter jets have performed 20 sorties and hit nine Islamic State installations,” Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, reported.

Konashenkov added that yesterday evening Russian aircraft went on six sorties, inflicting strikes on three terrorist installations.

“A bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb dropped from a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber near Raqqa has eliminated the command post of one of the terror groups, together with an underground storage facility for explosives and munitions,” the spokesman said.

Commenting on the video filmed by a Russian UAV monitoring the assault near Raqqa, Konashenkov noted, “a powerful explosion inside the bunker indicates it was also used for storing a large quantity of munitions.

“As you can see, a direct hit on the installation resulted in the detonation of explosives and multiple fires. It was completely demolished,” the spokesman said.

ISIS Fleeing Syria to Evade Russian Airstrikes

"The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) is under attack from above, but this time it is not from the U.S. led “Anti-ISIS Coalition” or the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF); no, the terrorist group is being bombarded by the numerous fighters jets of the Russian Air Force that are patrolling the skies above Syria’s eastern countryside.

In a matter of 48 hours, ISIS has been struck by the Russian Air Force inside the provincial capital of Al-Raqqa and its surrounding area at least 25 times and each time, the aforementioned air force targets an imperative site that was relatively untouched by the U.S. led Anti ISIS Coalition; this includes the Tabaqa Military Airport and Tabaqa National Hospital – ISIS’ primary military base and headquarters in Al-Raqqa.

With nowhere to run inside Syria, the terrorist group has been forced to flee to safer quarters outside of the country; this was confirmed by the Shaytat Tribesmen in the Deir Ezzor Governorate’s eastern countryside.

According to a military source from the 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard in Deir Ezzor, the Shaytat Tribesmen have reported that a large convoy of ISIS fighters and their families have begun their exodus from the cities of Al-Mayadeen and AbuKamaal to the nearby Iraqi province of Al-‘Anbar in anticipation for the increased Russian airstrikes inside Deir Ezzor.

Recently, the Russian Air Force has specifically targeted the terrorist group inside the Deir Ezzor Governorate, striking ISIS sites along the imperative Deir Ezzor-Raqqa International Highway and Al-Mayadeen-Deir Ezzor Road."

Russia Says French Jet Flew Dangerously Close to Official Plane
Oct 19, 2015 - Russia's foreign ministry accused a French military plane on Monday of approaching "dangerously close" to a passenger jet carrying an official parliamentary delegation as it flew through French airspace.
Paris, however, quickly dismissed the allegation and said that the jet involved in the incident was actually Swiss. The ministry in Moscow said in a statement that it had summoned France's ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert to "give an explanation" of the incident. "A plane of the French airforce flew dangerously close to a jet with a Russian parliamentary delegation headed by the Russian State Duma speaker Sergei Naryshkin," the statement said, adding the officials were travelling to a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva. "The ambassador was made aware of Russia's deep concern over what happened," it said, adding that "actions like these by Paris undermine the possibility of using France as a place for multilateral meetings and talks."

France's foreign ministry rebuffed the Russian claim, saying that "it was a Swiss plane, an F-18, and no French military plane is involved." Swiss authorities did not immediately give a reaction to the alleged incident. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova later said in televised comments that Moscow is waiting for an explanation from both the French and Swiss authorities over the incident. "We have to work out what happened and why it was done," Zakharova said. Naryshkin's spokeswoman Yevgenia Chugunova told AFP that the warplane flew so close that members of the delegation could take a picture. "I can confirm that this incident involving a French military plane happened this morning," she said. "We saw it very close."

Naryshkin, who is on both the EU and US blacklists for publicly supporting the deployment of Russian forces to Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, told Russian agencies he is aware of what happened although he did not see the warplane himself. Another member of the delegation, Sergei Gavrilov, told TASS news agency that the approach took place "at the altitude of 3,700 metres (12,100 feet) above the Swiss border" and called it an "unfriendly act by NATO".

Swiss fighter check on jet inflames Russian-French tensions
Tue Oct 20, 2015 * Speaker of parliament was on board jet bound for Geneva * Moscow summons French ambassador to lodge protest * France, Switzerland say aircraft was Swiss
Switzerland's military said one of its fighter jets performed a routine identification check on a Russian plane in Swiss air space on Monday, prompting Moscow to complain the aircraft came "dangerously" close to each other. Russia initially summoned the French ambassador in Moscow to protest, alleging a French military jet had come into "dangerous proximity" with the Tupolev, whose passengers included the Speaker of its lower house en route to Geneva. Moscow, which had threatened not to use France as a venue for international meetings in retaliation, later apologised for the mistake.

A Swiss Department of Defence spokesman on Monday evening confirmed the fighter was a Swiss F/A 18 jet that had been sent to verify the identity of the Russian plane with diplomatic clearance. Spokesman Peter Minder said the Swiss jet flew close enough to make visual contact with the Russian pilot, but there was no danger of a collision. "It's standard procedure," Minder said, adding the Swiss military performs such "live missions ... a hundred times a year" to confirm that aircraft entering Switzerland's air space have appropriate clearance. "It's just a matter of identification," he said. Contact with the Russian pilot was made around 08:22 GMT and the plane's identity was confirmed, Minder said, at which point the Swiss fighter returned to its base. The Russian plane landed in Geneva as planned. France was quick to deny involvement. "No French army aircraft was involved in the incident with the official Russian aircraft that the Russian Foreign Ministry mentioned," France's defence and foreign ministries said in a joint statement. "We regret therefore that the French ambassador to Moscow was summoned on the spot."

The Russian Speaker, Sergei Naryshkin, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin was heading to Geneva for an international meeting of parliamentarians. Geneva's airport is very close to Switzerland's border with France, which may have led to confusion about whose airspace Naryshkin's aircraft was in and the jet's nationality. There has been an uptick in the number of near-miss type incidents involving NATO and Russian military aircraft since separatist conflict, which the West accuses Russia of stoking, broke out in Ukraine. Earlier this month, Putin travelled to Paris for talks on Ukraine with French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. NATO member states have accused Russian military jets in particular of flying dangerously close to Western military and civilian aircraft on numerous occasions. Moscow has denied breaking any aviation rules.
