OBAMA: Auto Industry Bailout Saved 1 Million Jobs

OBAMA: Auto Industry Bailout Saved 1 Million Jobs | News One

Government help is not always bad. Now if the so called "job creators" were doing their job they wouldn't need the government to bail them out.

You left out the word, "Union".

The bailout as passed was aimed not at saving jobs, but at saving Union Jobs.

The great fear as presented to the public was that if a bankruptcy proceeding occurred, there would be a loss of faith in the products of the company and an eventual failure of the companies affected.

What was the first step in the bail out? Bankruptcy. However, the bail out provisions demanded that the union would remain intact. Lunacy. If there was no bail out and a bankruptcy had occurred, the Unions would not have had bargaining rights with the reorganized auto manufacturing entities that emorged.

What makes the American Auto Industry uncompetitive is the cost structure and this is driven primarily by the labor rates. As long as there is a UAW, there will be too high labor rates. The industry was dying of a cancer and the prescription was to save the cancer.

Brilliant!

It was everything that years of experience with government planning has taught us to expect.

In any economy if you have a program that is counterproductive....which unions are....you let them fail so you can fix the problem. Instead Obama and friends perpetuate the problem by bailing it out temporarily.

Good grief, the next BAILOUT from the Obama should be hip waders for every American citizen.

Is this the same Obama that told us the unemployment rate wouldn't go above 8% and that there are 57 states and he was going to close Gitmo and that Afghanistan was the good war and that Obamacare wasn't a tax and this was the summer of recovery and the U.S, knew nothing of the release of the Lockerbie Bomber and no federal $$ would go to fund abortion and we'd have a new era of tranparancy and....

That Obama?

According to data from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), total
automotive employment in the United States increased by 8% from 1991 to 2005 (but by just 4%
since 1990), rising from 1,054,000 workers to 1,098,000.

The automotive parts companies experienced an 8% increase in employment from 1990 to 2005
(12% from 1991), growing from 782,800 to 848,400 workers,

Total automotive employment is approximately 2 million workers which includes production and parts. What would have been the impact if the automotive industry would have been allowed to collapse? Would half of those workers have lost their jobs while the US Auto industry restructured itself and looked for investors?
1 million lost jobs seems possible.

The bigger question was the money we invested in the bailout worth it?

Hell yes

Possible, but who knows. Nobody knows if the one million figure is true or not, so to say it's a fact is dishonest. The White House pulls numbers out of their ass. Obama just said the other day that we've now had seven straight months of job growth which isn't true because over 130k job were just lost in July.

The bigger question was the money we invested in the bailout worth it?

Hell yes

No, it wasn't worth it. The bailout rewarded bad business practices by the auto industry and the UAW and sent them a message that if they fuck up there is nothing to worry about. We'll just have the taxpayers bail their asses out because they're too "important" to lose.

The question is....are we willing to abandon our auto industry? Nobody but the government was willing to invest in the auto companies at that time. The search for foreign investors fell through. I personally, would have hated for our auto companies to be run by foreign corporations

We elected an organizer for SEIU and ACORN to the office of President, and that's exactly what we got-an organizer for SEIU and ACORN, who has put their agenda above the needs of the entire nation.

Obama is a union member? If not, I'm sure he broke union rules leading a cheer. He is going to get a visit.

How many jobs were lost because money was diverted from the real private sector to bailout yet another subpar GSE?

None

The private sector has demonstrated over the last year that no matter how much money we pump their way they are unwilling to invest in new jobs

Maybe you should force them to take new bailout money. Then you can feel justified in making them hire people.
