In "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand, the government has decided to take from the achievers, the people who have and demonstrated the ability to achieve and make things happen.

They are being looted by those who don't have that the abiliy as these achievers.

The looters' (i.e. those that get the government influence) ability is to make laws to take from these people.

Society has changed from a society based on production and profit to a society based on pull and getting favors from people who are good at making profit. As a result of these various laws to benefit these select few, the economy goes into turmoil)

How much do you think Obama is changing America to become like this type of society in Atlas Shrugged?

We'll start with "Not at all".

Got anything new to add? Or is this just more of the same rhetoric?

Name one right that Obama has taken away from you. Start there, and if you can come up with one, we can start the "compare Obama to fictional characters and situations" game.

He is still working on it.

The health care bill

Cap & trade

The global warming hoax regulations

They haven't passed yet

I've got to get that book.

Read "Anthem" by her instead. It makes the same point, in about 900 less pages.

Atlas Shrugged is one of the most overrated books I've ever read - and not because of it's politics - I know where I stand with Ayn Rand. It's just a poorly written 1000 page monstrosity that's thesis can be summed up in one sentence.

How do any of those bills (aside from the healthcare bill, I see what you mean there) take money from "the achievers" to give to the "non-acheivers"

Have you looked at the Cap & Trade bill the House passed? The diversion of wealth from consumers at large (i.e. us working folk) to special interests (estimates range as high as 80% of revenues) is staggering not to mention the brand new government created market for carbon credit trading.

The whole scam has "looting" written all over it and the worst part is that it's probably not going to help the environment or our energy independence in any significant way.

The basic premise of Atlas Shrugged is an epic fail right out the gate.

Apparently these so called 'acheivers' are not able to achieve any sort of influence on their own stinking government.

FTR: I've never read it. But I did read half of Fountainhead and as I've said before, nothing more than a glorified piece of shit romance novel.

Atlast Shrugged is one of my favorite books. But I wouldn't want to live in a Randian nightmare world.

As a political philosopher, she was a good novelist.

Well, personal taste is personal taste. I had a hard time getting through Atlas Shrugged - She uses too many words to say too little. I had a better time getting through Anthem. In terms of her politics - she admitted that her politics were entirely utopian ideals, with no basis to exist in our society - and, like you said, I have no desire to live in a Randian nightmare world either.

...

How much do you think Obama is changing America to become like this type of society in Atlas Shrugged?

Quite a bit. But to be fair, this has been going on for decades. Each year we lose a little bit more economic freedom. And the wealthy and corporations are already 'shrugging' by sending their operations and wealth off-shore.

What has Obama changed?

I am still waiting for the socialist policies to kick in myself. UHC is several years away, the Cap and trade is several years away(if it ever passes)

And by the way, Where is all this "Obama money" rush keeps talking about??

Obama has yet to do anything besides bailout Corporations and Banks. If I did not know any better, I would say that Obama is catering to the "fat cats" while telling us "little guys" a pack of lies. What do the rest of you guys think??

Pefect example of the Atlas Shrugged World

Democrats Hammered for 'Back-Room' Deal With Unions on Health Care

In pushing a giant step closer to a health care reform deal, Democratic leaders are once again drawing fire from their critics for extending special treatment to an interest group in exchange for its support of the bill.

Interestingly, I had never read it. And then I went to my high school reunion and one of my old friends asked what my favorite book was. He told me his was Atlas Shrugged, so I finally got around to it.

I think Ayn Rand's philosophy is incredibly self-indulgent and self-pitying.

Completely agreed.
