Obama asks black NY Governor not to run

The President does wear two hats, you know. If he wants to dispense political advice via his political staff wearing his political party leader hat, that's up to him. Happens all the time. Look at the Bush disagreements over who should run for what and when, and that was all in the family.
It isn't especially classy to air the party's laundry in public, but looking at the wording and the source I agree with jillian 100% - the leak was not the White House's doing. If it were, the anonymous source would be described with some connection to the Administration. It's the Daily News after all.
Or for all we know, it could have been a janitor listening at the door and running off to sell what he heard to the highest tabloid bidder. Wouldn't be the first time for that either.
Nothing new here.

yeah, if the administration had leaked it, the opening grafs would read something like this...

"WASHINGTON — President Obama has sent a request to Gov. David A. Paterson that he withdraw from the New York governor’s race, fearing that Mr. Paterson cannot recover from his dismal political standing, according to two senior administration officials and a New York Democratic operative with direct knowledge of the situation.

The decision to ask Mr. Paterson to step aside was proposed by political advisers to Mr. Obama, but approved by the president himself, one of the administration officials said."

and it certainly wouldn't be in some rag like the daily news!

The White House made a request ... I didn't hear an order given. However, Obama is the de facto head of the party so when he makes a suggestion like that it's prolly best to take it into heavy consideration. It seems like pure politics to keep a dem in the chair.

Concern troll is concerned.

I don't know what the fuck the Constitution has to do with this.
10th Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

He hasn't violated this, he is attempting to violate this. He is federal, this is a state. He has few authorities at a state level at all, expecially not any authority to dictate who runs for their executive position.

He's making a suggestion, you asshat, not giving an order. Patterson can ignore it and run if he damn well pleases.

looks like si modo wants to take away the black presidents freedom of speech, how unamerican, won't somebody think of the constitution?

Personally, I don't care who runs for governor in New York. Nor does it surprise me that the White House isn't confident that Patterson would stand a chance. What does surprise me is that the White House let this become so blatantly public. These sort of things are usually done behind closed doors with the incumbent making a statement about deciding not to run for personal reasons or to spend more time with the old lady, uh, I mean, loving and supporting wife and the brats, uh, I mean, family, and so on. Seems that the Obama machine blew right past that move and went straight for the kill in a very public and pretty undignified manner.

Pretty arrogant.

It's not exactly like the White House's feud with Paterson has been private, although this particular conversation going public is classless. I did find this interesting, from del's link:

“The message the White House wanted to send — that it wants Paterson to step aside — was delivered,” said the Democratic operative,, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were intended to be confidential. “He is resistant.”

Combined with this form the same sotry:

Leading Democrats in the state have expressed deep concern about Mr. Paterson’s ability to hold on to the office. But most have been wary of openly suggesting he step aside.

The White House move could give them cover to abandon Mr. Paterson and endorse another candidate, most likely Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who has been debating for months whether to take on Mr. Paterson in a primary.

I wonder how many layers there are to this particular cake? Politics is a funny business.

The article says nothing about who LEAKED the story...which was MY point. And of course the white house wants Paterson out...he's a horrible governor, loses in every poll and they don't want to waste resources on paterson when Cuomo is going to beat him anyway... and they're going to need to funds whether it's guiliani who runs against him or not.

So maybe I'm kind of missing what you're trying to say.

You know Xeno, your title was quite different than the article. :eusa_eh:

Also, not sure if this has been done before so directly? However, Obama is right in one part, Paterson is not going to win if he runs for reelection.

I was visiting my parents when he was appointed and he was going to be the best thing to happen etc ect and YES afro american was headliner along with blind

Obama asks the BLACK governor not to run because Obama obviously thinks he's not right for the job, or the state or the country or the Democratic Party.

But the media and the conservatives, you know, the "I'm not racist" people have to name him the BLACK governor. Obama doesn't want the BLACK governor to run. It's as if they believe Obama should believe that the only qualification for being a BLACK governor was to be BLACK.

I don't know why conservatives keep saying Obama is "wasting money"? He fixing roads and bridges. You would think patriots would want America to have a sound infrastructure. What did they fix? Even when bridges are collapsing and Americans dying, Republicans were creating "tax cuts" for rich people. They did nothing for health care, but cut benefits for veterans. How can they be so anti American and outraged at the same time.

The disaster on Minnesota's busiest bridge — which carries 141,000 cars a day — raised hopes of more money for infrastructure in general. The bridge collapse came two weeks after an 83-year-old steam pipe exploded under a street in Midtown Manhattan, sending a geyser of gases and debris hundreds of feet into the air.The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that the USA needs to spend $1.6 trillion over five years to put its infrastructure — which includes some 590,000 bridges — in good condition.

who on earth said that? most of us here in ny knew he wasn't equipped for the job. he was appointed because he was lt. governor..... so the process took over.

why do you idiots have to make this about race given it has zero to do with race.

except for the race baiters of course.

so i figure you're not exactly being honest anyway. *shrug*

It didn't take long for folks outside NY to figure him out either. His incompetence has nothing to do with his skin color, and nothing to do with his disability. The man is just plain incompetent. Although from what I gather, Cuomo and the State Dem party were worried about runing a white man to challenge him in the primaries.
There's a lot missing from the story, but it sounds like there could well have been some kind of request from the State party for the White House to step in and say something. Only the flies on the wall know for sure, but there's more to this story.
Not that it matters, really. Paterson shouldn't run again for the good of the State because he should know he's an incompetent boob.

My God,what has happened to New York? Does it even matter who their next Governor is going to be? The inept & corrupt Socialist Democrats have just about destroyed that state once and for all. Can they really be saved at this point? They're coming off having their worst two Governors in their history back to back. I'm not sure the next Governor will ever be able to fix the terrible damage done by the Democrats. Seriously, who in their right mind would rush out there in New York and vote for more inept Socialist Democrats? Oh well it is America so i guess anything is possible. Good luck New York because you're definitely gonna need it.

Now we see barry trying to dictate who should run for election in the states, NY in this case.

If only he was as anal about wasting money as he is about trying to control everything.

Obama administration asks Gov. Paterson not to seek reelection in 2010

"The preference is that he not run. That message was conveyed directly."

I don't think story is Gov. Peterson, but AG Andrew Couomo.

He was HUD secretary with Clinton administration. He took actions that helped plunge Fannie and Freddie into the subprime markets. He also turned the Federal Housing Administration mortgage program into a sweetheart lender with sky-high loan ceilings and no money down and forced banks into bad loans.

i have never heard of one

1. That's because most people are smarter than Paterson and wouldn't publicize it.

2. Really? They didn't ask Blagoyovich to step down?

and to RGS who seems to have a bit of a problem with reality:

who publicized it? the white house? doubtful

and the president is ALWAYS considered the head of his party.
Blago is a different situation, he is actually under investigation and charged with a CRIME
what is Patersons crime?

then someone should run against him in the primary
