Santorum: Obama Already Has 'The Deal He Likes'

By Greg McDonald

Former Sen. Rick Santorum says President Barack Obama already has the budget deal he wants from Congress and is willing to allow the Dec. 31 deadline on sequestration to expire in order to make Republicans look bad.

"He's saying no because he likes the deal he has in place," Santorum told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren Monday night, referring to the deficit reduction law passed last year that triggers automatic spending cuts and tax increases beginning in 2013 if lawmakers and the president fail to reach a long-term budget agreement.

"The reason I think he's saying no — and I think he will say no to just about anything the Republicans put forward — is because the fallback position is better for him than any deal that the Republicans are going to put forward," the Pennsylvania Republican continued.

"And the fallback position is a tax increase on everybody . . . He can then have his big increases in taxes, and then at the same time blame Republicans for taxes going up on lower-income people. That's a win for him."

Santorum, who at one point led the field of 2012 GOP presidential candidates, said if Obama does allow the country to take that dive off the so-called fiscal cliff, Congress and the White House would likely hammer out a deal on tax cuts for lower-income Americans.

But he said the president would still have a victory on two fronts — an increase in tax rates on the wealthy and deep spending cuts that he can also blame on Republicans.

"What he really wants is more taxes, which is what he gets if he gets nothing [from Republicans in the current negotiations]," Santorum said. "And here's the most important thing. He gets big cuts in defense, which he would never get under a negotiated deal of any kind with Republicans and Democrats.

The automatic spending cuts in both defense and discretionary spending, he added, "are going to be much more than any negotiated deal."

Santorum called it a fallback position the president "can live with," adding the problem for Republicans is that Obama doesn't agree the Dec. 31 deadline is actually a cliff.

"He has the deal that was put in place over a year ago, which is all the tax rates going back to where they were [during the Bill Clinton presidency], and two big cuts, a big cut in defense and a big cut in domestic programs," Santorum said.

"He doesn't see it as a cliff. He sees it as actually a pretty good deal they negotiated over a year ago that puts him in a position where he doesn't have to negotiate."

And what happens if/when the economy tanks and we go into a recession on his watch? I don't think the republicans will have much of a problem convincing voters that a change in policy is necessary.

They wont see the truth. They are blinded by his color and charisma.

Defense budget cuts = we get attacked = martial law = a 3rd term.

If this is true, the GOP is even dumber than I thought.

The GOP - by Santorum's logic - has the opportunity to call Obama's bluff by accepting the offer to permanently lock-in tax cuts for all income below 250K. (These tax cut ALSO benefit the wealthy because they get the lower rate on their first 250K - therefore - EVERYONE BENEFITS).

(Fucking morons)

The GOP cannot do lock-in the largest tax breaks in history because their party is 100% owned by the concentrated wealth which is living off-shore in the Caymans. And what's going to happen if you extend the tax cuts for wealthiest 1%? You will give these people more money to store overseas. Ever since the tax cuts started, these people have kept their money offshore. Even under Bush. The only money invested from these tax cuts went into the Housing Securities and Derivatives which exploded and destroyed the economy.

Investors will not put one dime into the domestic economy until the middle class has enough money to consume. Not one fucking dime. I repeat: not one job will be added until there is demand. But - and here is the fucking tragedy - you cannot create demand through austerity.

Starting in the 80s, business got it's cheap labor. It was able to take advantage of cheap labor overseas. Now, the largest employer is Walmart, which enjoys massive profits because their labor costs are a fraction of what old middle class labor jobs paid. Problem is: with wages so low, American workers don't have enough money to buy things.

You don't get it. If you put a dime in a wealthy man's pocket, he will store it offshore for his kids. If you put a dime in a middle class wallet, the capitalist will be forced to invest in order to capture that dime.

We need to go back to old formula. Capitalize the middle class - make sure they are solvent through demand centered policies - then watch the capital flow in to capture that money.

WHEN THE MIDDLE CLASS HAS MONEY, THE CAPITALIST HAS TO ADD JOBS IN ORDER TO CAPTURE THAT MONEY. YOU CANNOT GROW AN ECONOMY WITHOUT DEMAND.

Clinton tax rates = 22 million jobs.
Bush tax rates = 1 million jobs.

(The Clinton tax plan moved money to middle class families. And when middle class families have alot of spending money, the capitalist is FORCED to invest in order to capture that money)

Obamination is just playing a game with the GOP and this country, it's all a joke to him.

Taxes are going up on all workers and the DoD is going to get sliced up, a socialist's wetdream.

He will then use the media to blame the GOP and the dumbfucks here will come here repeating what they heard on the news....."The GOP let our taxes go up."

Then it will be just another day here since that's all they do now. Only their news is The Daily Kos, MSPMS, Huff-Poop and Jon Stewart.

The fiscal cliff is what obama wanted all along. He would never get the defense cuts he wants without it.

Santorum has never been right about anything before. What makes you think he's right this time?

Oh...I know. Because he's talkin' bad about Obama and that MUST be right!

Glad you picked up on the stereo-type. :clap2:

Yes, they will, and they shouldn't even try. What the Republicans should do is sit back and watch it all sink to the bottom, let the takers take to the streets wanting to take some,, turn on their TV and point at the screen and laugh.. and say "we're butthurt" that will give the Rosiepig some instant gratification. :D

What he REALLY wants is to punish the rich, as he sees them as an anathema to his anointed vision of socializing America, and in so doing he pleases his base of freeloaders.

Gotta love this.

When Republicans are in power..they rule like dictators. And generally with less of a mandate.

Then they usually wind up FUCKING THINGS UP SO BADLY..they have to scramble to get Democratic help out of their problems.

Happened with Reagan.
Happened with Bush I.
Happened with Bush II.

Bailouts every time.

Obamination's entire political career has been all about blaming his competition.

He learned this in the cesspool of Chicago where he dug up dirt on fellow Democraps to beat them in local elections. He spent his entire first term blaming Bush, the GOP Congress and rich people.

Now, he is going after the GOP Congress and rich people again since Bush can't be blamed for the previous 4 years. This trick is to let us go over the cliff, then blame the GOP for letting it happen when that was the plan from the start.

The GOP fucked up when they agreed to these preprogrammed cuts.
