There was too much political backlash as well. It really is a matter of "damned if you do" in his position, especially where this is concerned, but I, for one, would have liked to see him stick to his (and supposedly OUR) principles.

Alot of posters seem to think closing Gitmo is just as easy as changing clothes, I have a feeling theres alot more to it though? he probably really wanted to do it but it just wasn't possible, alot of people are opposed to transfering the Gitmo inmates to regular US Prisons.

Not "regular" US prisons, but the highest of high security prisons. It could have been done, and some communities welcomed the federal dollars involved, but the right screamed, and Obama caved. It IS what it is.

Obama wanted to close GITMO so he could bring them here and give them rights under the Constitution. As long as they're in GITMO we don't have to as per the directives laid out in the Geneva Convention.

Now why would he want to give terrorists rights?

Could it be because he wanted to put on show trials intended to trash the United States?

He didn't really try. What he did do was stop military tribunals so he could give these guys the same rights we have during a trial and thus place the burden of proof on the military.

Issues that would arise would be, was he read his rights?

Are there witnesses to alleged acts?

Was he given the right to ask for a lawyer?



The answer to all of the above is no. Of course not.

The very thought of this is ridiculous.
