WASHINGTON, June 7 (Reuters) - Congressional intelligence committee leaders turned up the heat on the White House over alleged national security leaks on Thursday, with the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee suggesting she might be willing to join Republican demands for an investigation by a special counsel.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the committee's Democratic chairwoman, told reporters she needed more time to consider Republican demands - voiced earlier this week by Senator John McCain and committee vice chair Saxby Chambliss - for a special counsel to probe how highly sensitive secrets were disclosed to news media.

The Intelligence Committee chiefs and other legislators have called for urgent investigations into recent media disclosures on U.S. cyber warfare against Iran, procedures for targeting militants with drones, and the existence of a double agent who penetrated a militant group in Yemen.

McCain has suggested that some of the leaks may have been calculated to boost the election prospects of President Barack Obama - something White House spokesmen emphatically deny. Feinstein cautioned that she was still pondering the "special counsel" idea for the current leak inquiries because "A special prosecutor can take years. We don't have years. We need to legislate and we need to do things quickly."

She suggested she might propose legislation to give inspectors general of government departments more investigatory authority.

Historically, some special counsels, such as the prosecutor who conducted a lengthy leak-related investigation that led to the conviction of a top aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney on obstruction and perjury charges, have been accused of pursuing witch-hunts.

Feinstein and Chambliss joined the House Intelligence committee's Republican chairman Mike Rogers and ranking Democrat C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger at an unusual Capitol Hill news conference following a closed-door meeting on the leaks issue with James Clapper, Director of There were fresh indications on Thursday that even if Attorney-General Eric Holder does not formally appoint a special counsel, the Justice Department could create some kind of special chain of command to handle leak inquiries.

At the news conference, Rogers said portions of the Justice Department's National Security Division (NSD) had removed themselves from elements of at least one current leak investigation.

Rogers later issued a statement clarifying that he did not mean to suggest wrongdoing by Justice Department officials, but was merely pointing out the hazards of a Justice Department-led investigation of the leaks.

I was really surprised to find out about the instance of Israel and the US and the cyber attack on Iran's nuclear program. It was actually detailed as to how they did it.
So the question is--did the Obama administration deliberately leak this information to the media in an effort to boost him up? John McCain thinks so.

Your thoughts?

-----------Eric Holder was testifying in front of a congressional Committee recently concerning the Justice Dept. failure to properly respond to Congressional suppeona's. I sincerely doubt Holder has the integrety to do anything like question the Administration about these leaks. Also Obama has said or done nothing to get to the bottom of "Fast and Furious", he should be looking for Holder's head in this, but he won't, especially now as these serious charges begin to gather steam.

Agreed--you can't have the administration's justice department investigating the administration. But something certainly has got Diane Feinstein in an uproar over this--and if you can get this liberal upset about something that a democrat administration is doing--there is definitely something to be concerned about. Leaking top secret information to the media--is a crime.

As I read in a post recently, if you want to know who is responsible for the leak, just look and see who benefitted.

McCain isn't playing with a full deck.

Is it too late to Impeach this POS POTUS?

It clearly could be an Impeachable offense if proven he ordered the leaks.

I don't know if he ordered them or not, But clearly someone very Close. I think his Political Hack NSA Adviser who Has no business being the NSA in the First place is the Culprit. Either way Obama is the Boss, and in the End he is responsible whether he ordered the leak, or just has so little control over even his closest people, that he can't stop a very High level, Damaging CRIMINAL leak. Or should I say Leaks.

I say to hell with Impeachment, Just Vote his ass out in NOV.

Yes.

That would be the difference in judging what is or is not insane between you and I.

What Obama's "people" did or did not leak will come out as these things are easy to trace. When only a handful of individuals have knowledge that really narrows down how something got out. I'm sure someone will get fired or charged with a crime when it is all sorted out. I cannot concieve of a good reason for Obama to have been involved. I don't like everything about him but one thing is for sure..he is very smart and plays a good game of chess.

PS...his immediate "people" did a pretty good job of keeping the Ossama raid a secret...for several months.

White House's top secret scandal?

Obama accused of leaking National Security Secrets for personal political gain.

Bush was accused of going after Saddam because he tried to assassinate his daddy.

Accusations are fun, aren't they?

Clinton bombed Saddam as well for going after Bush Sr. After that, Clinton, his wife, Gore, Kerry, Reid, Pelosi, Schumer .... all built the case and presented Bush with the Intel to back it up. They supported him on it as well.

It gets worse:

Eric Holder appoints an Obama donor to investigate the White House leaks scandal

I haven’t weighed in on the Obama regime’s leak scandal to this point but it is getting interesting and I think it is time to write a brief post on it. Somebody in the Obama regime is leaking classified information to the press and it just so happens that the leaked information paints Barack Obama as a tough, no nonsense, take no prisoners sort of guy in relation to national defense. All of the leaked information has the potential to strengthen the president’s national security credentials and some have questioned whether the White House actually authorized the leaks for this specific purpose. This is a claim which Barack Obama has stated is “offensive” and “wrong.

”Taking into account the president’s stern denial it would seem likely he would want to clear his name and the best way to accomplish this goal would be to have a special prosecutor investigate the leak scandal. Surely if he had nothing to hide Barack Obama would not be opposed to hiring a special prosecutor, but Eric Holder has refused to appoint a special prosecutor opting instead to appoint two people from within his Department of Injustice.

And as can be read here, these prosecutors will not be granted special powers or independence which means their work will be reviewed by the Department of Injustice before it is made public. We have seen something like this before with regards to Operation Fast and Furious; Eric Holder tried to obstruct Kenneth Melson’s testimony, and threatened two other witnesses while “urging” them to change their testimony before the Oversight Committee in an attempt to control the message, so I think we have a pretty good idea how this will play out.

But it gets worse because according to this article one of the special prosecutors just happens to be a political appointee of Barack Obama’s, and he also just happens to be a donor to the scandal ridden president. The fix is in, will the Republicans allow this to happen?

No, we're not. We are talking about allegations that top secret intel was leaked. Not that the Obama administration leaked it. It could have been leaked by someone not connected to the administration. It could just be a wingnut witch hunt.
