NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – After targeting distracted drivers, some New York lawmakers want to go after distracted walkers. They are looking to ban them from using iPods, music players and cell phones while walking and crossing the street.

“We have people who are literally dying in the street,” Kruger said.

“When people are doing things that are detrimental to their own well being, then government should step in,” Kruger said.

The fine for violating the law would be $100, which supporters hope will be enough to stem what they think is a disturbing trend — a slight increase in fatalities.

NYC just can't get a grip on the big issues, so this is the kind of shit the politicians work on.

^^^^ That about sums up what is wrong with America. Our Government is full of idiots who have no understanding of the Constitution.... but I have no doubt that the left will argue that this is covered under 'General Welfare'. Fucking idiot.

Yep. We need to outlaw stupidity. And then maybe no one will ever die. Politicians are soooo noble.

Maybe we should just cut to the chase and outlaw death.

Everything we do is detrimental to our well being, even the stuff that is good for us.

when they get to breathing, give me a holler. They should start in City Hall first.....

I can actually see this as a good thing, for example, if someone blunders into the street while doing this and a car hit them, as long as the car had right of way, the person hit would be technically performing a violation. Driver has a better case when the idiot hit sues them.

That should let us off the hook for their medical expenses too huh?? Yay team.

You guys miss the brilliance of the 'law'...

This will lead to enforcement, whereby there will be two walkers to accompany each citizen, one on each side...to look left and right, of course.

And...that's the end of the unempoyment problem, as well!

It's a win-win!

Wait- didn't Swift write about this idea in Gulliver's Travels???

Good health is actually the slowest possible rate of dying.

Sometimes I wonder why we moved back to New York,Like the old Great full Dead song says, new york has ways and means, but just won't let you be.

They should outlaw good health to speed up the dying process and save money. How much money do you think we could save if everyone died at 50? We could stop worrying about paying back Social Security, and use all that money however we wanted.

Nope. Jay Walking is already illegal. Not that it matters when compared to the important stuff like who is the person related to, who do they know, who might be offended in a position of power, should you rule the wrong way. The Privileged Class has rights you know. You inconvenience them or question, or upset the balance, and you will be shown, punished, and reeducated.

'There is no Sanctuary, there is no Sanctuary.

Then again, that was at 30.

NYC ought to be working on getting their unions under control so they can plow their fucking streets during blizzards so that newborn babies and elderly women don't die because the paramedics can't get to them.

Logan's Run Obama Health Care Plan, yes I've heard of it. Great movie.

What I would love to see when the snowfall is over 6 inches, no school buses should be allowed on any unsalted unsanded street. Either get the plows out there in a timely manner, or forfeit federal school funding for every day you delay. Ice on the streets with no salt is too hazardous, for everyone out there. Extended winter hours could be compensated by more summer off time for Sanitation. The Workers would go for the concept, if the Union would step out of the way.

It's only a matter of time before they outlaw sex for males over 45 because of the risk of heart attack

Well, the ban and fine is stupid imo and would probably be a major hassle for cops to enforce. And Kruger's comment can be stretched to absurd examples.

What I would like to see is that car drivers aren't AUTOMATICALLY at fault if they hit a pedestrian. If the walker/runner is jamming to their iPod or yapping on cell phone while power-walking through a red-hand crosswalk, then they should have some liability for their medical bills if getting hit.

This may vary state by state, but where I live it's automatically the drivers fault. I don't like that.

We would all be really safe if we were required to just sit in one place until a unionized public employee came to "handle"us.
