As Mr. McCain enters this closing stretch, his aides — as well as some outside Republicans and even a few Democrats — argue that he still has a viable path to victory.

“The McCain campaign is roughly in the position where Vice President Gore was running against President Bush one week before the election of 2000,” said Steve Schmidt, Mr. McCain’s chief strategist. “We have ground to make up, but we believe we can make it up.”

That's absolute, utter, complete bullshit.

Gallup had Bush up by 5
ABC had Bush up by 2
Reuters had Gore up by 2
Voter.com had Bush up by 4

The average is Bush up by 2.

Obama is up by 7.5 on average right now.

Almost every single poll had Bush up by single digits.

All true. But it's wise to remember that Karl Rove will do or say anything to win.

You don't know... and it ain't over til it's over.

Now...the fact that PB needs to post the obvious? That's the spamemer's problem, I think.

Now ya know how the rest of us feel about the NY Times. :D

David, you seem to understand polls quite well. What's your take on the NY Times story on Acorn registration? Have some polls been weighted to take into account the supposed 1.3 million new Acorn registrations? If so, do they need to readjust their weighting?

We have 11 days to go and Obama now has a wider lead in projected electoral college votes than any candidate in either this or the previous election. I think McCain's window is closing rapidly, and it might take a miracle to save it.

No question about it unless the polls are widely off. And this is a distinct possibility considering how many polls are weighing in first time voters so heavily in their calculations.

Also there are still a lot of undecideds.

That being said it will not be easy for McCain but it can be done.
