Was watching a bit of the coverage of the black-out tonight, and I noticed on completely dark streets just north of Times Square, that most all of the power was out, but the iconic Advertising billboards? Most of them seemed to be working fine..

Blackout extends way south to MSGarden and some of the shots I could not place, but in MOST of them showing a very darkened Manhattan -- the TRAFFIC LIGHTS were OUT, but the jeans and vacation ads were still lit...

How can there be a need to call-in every cop in the boroughs to direct traffic in Manhattan, but the sales pitches go on? It's called "incentive" and "accountability"... Those billboards are only valuable, when they are working. The revenue is based on "up-time" and exposure.. So they were designed with either battery backup or generators.

If the windmills and the solar generation can be battery backed up as a NATIONAL grid design ( I actually doubt this, but for arguments' sake) why can't the Manhattan traffic lights be also?

Why is it that critical infrastructure that the city owns that provide safety and security are not designed with worst case scenarios in mind? There's no INCENTIVE or really VISIBILITY for spending money on stuff in govt that only makes you a hero "once in a long while"..

Seems to me this Socialist Fancy that's spreading obviously means "single payer" for a LARGE SECTION of the US economy.. And what's the MOTIVATION and INCENTIVE to stay ahead of the problems and produce reliable, well designed systems? Do you really want the GOVT to inspect your elevators or a private company whose existence and reputation is on the line every day?

HHHMMMM????

I was with you completely until about 2/3 of the way down where you started snorting Drano.

I guess there really is no event where some wag won't go "hey! I can score points with this!"

I'm not the one snorting the Drano... I'm not pushing for bigger more muscular mental midgets to direct large sections of the economy... It would be those 20 or so insane clowns running for the Blue Presidency ticket -- who are all of a SUDDEN flying the Socialist flag...

ahhh they'll live

I remember 77 uh boy...i missed the one in 2003 I was overseas

After sandy downtown was out for awhile
some buildings even went without power for over a month

the real problem for NY is no new gas lines allowed (on top of them not being allowed to drill their own )
the utilities are not hooking any new customers up for gas service ...cali just made the news about not hooking up new customers for gas BUT ny has about a years lead on em

Crazy when NY state has easier access to one of the worlds largest oil and natural gas shale deposits ...

Yes, I already made the point about piling on for message board points, you needn't re-illustrate what's already obvious.

And there's no bigger insane clowns than the one that running for President AND running NYC -- and tonight huffing air for thousands of passengers STRANDED on his subterranean pickpocket trains...

Not very many subways in the world I WANT to get to stranded on.. But NYC system wouldn't be on my list of possibilities... Maybe the mayor shouldn't be inviting the homeless and illegals until he actually reviews and reworks HIS critical infrastructure... Just sayin'....

Very strange, there were no storms, no strain on the grid per se. Anyone heard of the possible cause for the blackout?

bear513 is out here claiming "solar flare".

Like a solar flare wanted to come to earth but could only afford a ticket to LaGuardia.

That's a remote but possible scenario.. There was a solar flare warning a couple weeks back.. But these transformers are way underground..

The shit you are posting would be like blaming Rudy Guiliani for the Twin Towers being hit by planes. New York city has a large population and an economy larger than some countries. You think shit is going to run smooth all the time? Hell if the electric and traffic lights go out in the little town where I live all the stores and restaurants shut down because all the registers are electric and digital, and there are cops at almost every intersection.

We get it, you hate NYC because the mayor is a Democrat.
