Ten law enforcement officers have been taken to the hospital. The train was carrying acrylonitrile.

From what I amreading now is it is being allowed to burn out due to toxicity and 10 officers already being hospitalized. This chemical is a carcinogen and burns the skin upon exposure.

The Blount county animal shelter is asking for volunteers with crates and food, as well as help evacuating the animals.

Price ya pay for modern technology, plastics, etc. Crap that goes into making those things is usually none too good for ya.

Spark ignited toxic gas being carried on one car after derailment. At least 5000 evacuated from Maryville.. And there is concern 2 other cars could be ignited carrying the same toxic gas.

The EPA says the substance is used in the manufacture of acrylic fibers and if inhaled in high levels can cause membrane irritation, headaches, nausea and kidney irritation.

You don't want to be exposed to it long term, but the main short term risks are acute symptoms, not chronic. That being said the evacuation is prudent, and anyone within a few hundred yards better be using respirators and suits.

To clarify from the SDS:

2. Long-term exposure: Acrylonitrile has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and has been associated with higher incidences of cancer in humans. Repeated or prolonged exposure of the skin to acrylonitrile may produce irritation and dermatitis.

: 1. Short-term exposure: Acrylonitrile can cause eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, sneezing, weakness, and lightheadedness. At high concentrations, the effects of exposure may go on to loss of consciousness and death. When acrylonitrile is held in contact with the skin after being absorbed into shoe leather or clothing, it may produce blisters following several hours of no apparent effect. Unless the shoes or clothing are removed immediately and the area washed, blistering will occur. Usually there is no pain or inflammation associated with blister formation.

Ok, seems the shelter is not being evacuated but is accepting pets from the evacuation area and needs help.

Hopefully those 10 hospitalized will only have short term effects from it. That is quite a few.

O'Briant said five officers with the Sheriff's Office and five from the Alcoa Police Department were exposed to the substance during efforts to evacuate 5,000 people from a 2-mile radius from the derailment.

"Going door to door, they just breathed in some of the fumes," she said.

The Sheriff's Office called in extra officers to deal with the situation, O'Briant said.

"Just about every emergency agency in Blount County is involved," she said.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency also has joined the effort.

Authorities have closed a section of U.S. Highway 321 between the bypass to West Blount Drive, O'Briant said. She was unsure if a detour route had been established.

Residents who use wells from south of Robert C. Jackson Drive off US. 321 to Friendsville should not drink the water, she said.

They are being told not to drink well water as a precaution.

That doesn't sound like too bad of an exposure, probably just being observed.

They are now saying there may be cyanide in the gas.

Fifty two people have been hospitalized with breathing problemd, skin irritations, and nausea.

The area is still evacuated.
