I've always been dissatisfied with the racist charge. It's too simple. The Right hated the Clintons more than Obama. Why? Because they were ten times more of a threat. Obama has passed more than Bush or Reagan. He's a push over. The GOP laid a perjury trap for Clinton because they couldn't stop him. He was the Teflon don. He dumped unions and started collecting huge money from Wall Street. The private sector loved him, if not publicly. He was the first of the new big business Democrats; he gave business a fully body massage with a happy ending.

The reason the racism card works is because of the GOPs history. They used the Southern Strategy to bring the party out of the New Deal Wilderness. Indeed, once they flipped the "Solid South", they became the big tent party. But yes, they gave a home to racists. For God's sake, Goldwater, Nixon and Wallace were brilliant in using Civil Rights backlash to soften the south up for Reagan's victory - which was like a seismic shift in electoral politics.

So yes, the GOP gives bigots, racists, and morons an institutional outlet. They give these people a political home where their stupidity has a kind of institutional codification that it would never get otherwise. We get that. But - and I hate to say it - I don't think the bigots run the show. I don't think Chaney or Bush or most of the GOP leadership are racists. Nor do I think the majority of GOP voters are racists. I think the racists are a small group of total fucking morons that the GOP welcomes with open arms. I think the leadership presses the right buttons with these people - but they make fun of the birthers and tea party morons behind their backs, like Rove did to Evangelicals. The GOP is merely using these idiots for votes. Same thing with the anti-semites. The GOP gives a home to a lot of hate groups, but the actual percentage of them is lower than the left realizes. The reason the Tea Party and the Birthers get a lot of media attention is because LARGE corporations own all the media - and those corporations want lower taxes and fewer regulations ... therefore, they will promote any group who attacks the Left. If you did a head count of these fucking nitwits, you'd realize that they are a small number.
