North Pole temperature 20C/36F above average

Political people in the United States are watching the chaos in Washington in the moment. But some people in the science community are watching the chaos somewhere else — the Arctic.
It’s polar night there now — the sun isn’t rising in much of the Arctic. That’s when the Arctic is supposed to get super-cold, when the sea ice that covers the vast Arctic Ocean is supposed to grow and thicken.
But in fall of 2016 — which has been a zany year for the region, with multiple records set for low levels of monthly sea ice — something is totally off. The Arctic is super-hot, even as a vast area of cold polar air has been displaced over Siberia.

OK, old Hoss, so you want to show how stupid you are. Well, that kind of temperature extreme is definately an indicator that something has changed radically. And we will see the effects in the lower 48 in the coming years.

You mean it's never going to stop getting warmer? I can predict that when the temperatures start going down for a few years the Leftheaded geniuses will continue to claim it's because of global warming. Has anyone ever considered that we've had the recent global warming because its actually from global cooling?

To make the temperatures permanently rise and get rid of all ice, both north and south, you need to discontinue the land bridge called Central America.

To get a 3 foot sea level rise, and create major disruptions in all the port cities of the world, you have to melt a very, very small percentage of the ice in Greenland and Antarctica.

Well now, why don't you just talk to Mr. Westwall about that. After all, he has been predicting a cooling for over ten years now. And all it has done is get warmer. You dumbkopf 'Conservatives' are all the same. You believe that you vast willful ignorance is equivelant to the years that the scientists have spent mastering their discipline. What utter fools you are.

During the Viking conquest, Greennland had some trees even, which is how it got its name. Today, Greenland hasn't yet turned even its grassland back to green yet.

The whole thing doesn't amount to much though. There are only 3 countries that you can wash off the map this way, Holland, Florida, and Bangladesh. You need a lot more for a little population shift migration volkswanderung.

No, Greenland got it's name because Eric the Red was a salesman.

Europeans became aware of Greenland's existence, probably in the early 10th century, when Gunnbjörn Ulfsson, sailing from Norway to Iceland, was blown off course by a storm, and happened to sight some islands off Greenland. During the 980s, explorers led by Erik the Red set out from Iceland and reached the southwest coast of Greenland, found the region uninhabited, and settled there. Eirik named the island Greenland (Grænland in Old Norse and modern Icelandic, Grønland in modern Danish and Norwegian) in effect as a marketing device. Both the Book of Icelanders (Íslendingabók, a medieval account of Icelandic history from the 12th century onward) and the Saga of Eric the Red (Eiríks saga rauða, a medieval account of his life and of the Norse settlement of Greenland) state "He named the land Greenland, saying that people would be eager to go there if it had a good name."[7]

According to the sagas, Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for three years for committing some murders.[8] He sailed to Greenland, where he explored the coastline and claimed certain regions as his own. He then returned to Iceland to persuade people to join him in establishing a settlement on Greenland. The Icelandic sagas say that 25 ships left Iceland with Erik the Red in 985, and that only 14 of them arrived safely in Greenland.[9] This date has been approximately confirmed by radiocarbon dating of some remains at the first settlement at Brattahlid (now Qassiarsuk), which yielded a date of about 1000. According to the sagas, it was also in the year 1000 that Erik's son, Leif Eirikson, left the settlement to explore the regions around Vinland, which is generally assumed to have been located in what is now Newfoundland.

Natural global cooling and man made global warming appear to be going hand in hand.

The problem is when something goes wrong that cannot be stopped.

what drove the vikings off of greenland

The Norse Vikings arrived in Greenland around 980 AD, during a 300-year-long warm period. Starting around 1100, however, the climate cooled rapidly. Average temperature dropped 4 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit) in only 80 years. Since the Norse—Viking fame aside—were largely farmers, this drop in temperature likely hit them hard. They began to leave Greenland shortly thereafter, and by the mid-15th century their settlements lay abandoned.
