South Korea has said they will conduct live fire drill Noon their time. Which my sources say that less than an hour from now.

“It is appalling. If it was a bona fide need for artillery practice they have plenty of islands in the Western Sea,” Leonid Petrov, a professor at the University of Sydney who specializes in Korea, told the Guardian. “This is simply sending a message that the South is putting pressure on the North – but at the same time refuses to negotiate.”

South Korea to begin exercises near border with North

South Korean marines on Yeonpyeong island, South Korea, 19 December. North Korea has condemned the plans to hold new exercises on Yeonpyeong island.

The South Korean military will begin live-firing exercises on an island close to the border with North Korea in the coming hours, its military says.

The move comes despite repeated threats of retaliation from Pyongyang.

Four people were killed when the North shelled the island during an earlier drill last month.

The UN Security Council has been discussing the situation in New York, but has failed to reach any agreement.

Speaking to reporters after more than eight hours of discussions, Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin called on South Korea to cancel its plans.

"It's better to refrain from doing this exercise at this point in time," he said.

He said the UN had failed to reach an agreement on the crisis, but contacts would be pursued between the main powers.

The issue has threatened to divide permanent members of the Security Council - with China and Russia urging South Korea to put off the exercise, but the US saying its ally is entitled to make sure it is "properly prepared in the face of... ongoing provocations".

The US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said it was "safe to predict that the gaps that remain are unlikely to bridged."

Meanwhile, tensions on the Peninsula are escalating, as South Korea said it would conduct a live-fire drill Monday from Yeonpyeong island.

Residents of Yeonpyeong were told to take shelter ahead of the imminent drill, which officials there said was part of routine exercises suspended after the DPRK's deadly artillery bombardment on the island on Nov. 23.

The drill is likely to be held between 11 a.m. and noon, Seoul's Yonhap News Agency said, citing unidentified sources.

The DPRK, saying its recent shelling was for its self-defense, railed against the planned firing exercise and warned of further "self-defensive blows."

Pyongyang has never recognized a disputed maritime border near Yeonpyeong, unilaterally drawn by the U.S.-led UN military forces at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The two Koreas have had fatal naval skirmishes near the sea border.

Representatives from the Armistice Commission and the United Nations Command are expected to watch the drill, according to local reports.
