North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory - Republican

Early voting starts Thursday in North Carolina, even as the state has pushed to move early voting sites farther away from college campuses.

The Republican-dominated North Carolina State Board of Elections, among other efforts, has sought to remove an early voting location from the campus of Appalachian State University, which has about 18,000 students, many of whom lean Democratic. Last week, the board filed a petition asking the state Supreme Court to stay a judge's ruling in favor of the site. On Wednesday afternoon, not having heard from the high court and with the start of early voting looming, the elections board hastily voted to keep the site on campus. Soon after, the state Supreme Courtannounced that it was staying the judge's ruling and sending the case back to the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

With just hours until voting began, an elections board spokesman told the Associated Press late Wednesday that the on-campus voting site would stand. But the battle over early voting in the state continues.

County election officials had already eliminated North Carolina State University’s early voting site this year. In August, the state elections board, whose membership was replaced by Gov. Pat McCrory (R) last year, voted to remove Appalachian State’s early voting site. But college students there fought back.

Ian O’Keefe, an Appalachian State senior active in the local College Democrats chapter, said, “Our election board should be making voting easier, not more difficult.” O'Keefe is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed against the election board.

According to their lawsuit, Appalachian State’s early voting site was the only one in Watauga County that went Democratic for the last two presidential elections and the 2010 Senate and 2012 gubernatorial elections.

“This is a way the Republican Party is attempting to win elections instead of convincing voters to vote for them, and that's just wrong,” O’Keefe said.

Why do Republicans consistently cheat to win?

They don't constantly "cheat to win" any more than the democrats "cheat to win".

Regardless, I oppose college students being allowed to vote where they are going to college unless they have established residence in the locality like renting a house, registering their car there, etc. Some kid from Ohio should have no say in NC politics because they live in a dorm there and some kid from NC should have no say on Ohio politics. Get an absentee ballot from where you are a resident if you want to vote.

Agreed. We also have to stop counting prisoners as part of the population where they are incarcerated. If in for a misdemeanor, absentee ballot, if in for a felony, too bad, so sad.

That would hurt rural more republican counties more (especially in NY) but fair is fair.

Lakota,

Isn't it interesting how your OP isn't disputed on it's merit, but Bootlicker goes right to hoping you die just like the early Natives did from intentionally diseased blankets?

Yup, now those students can continue to vote again and again.

Btw, NC has a strange law that allows underage children to register to vote...

North Carolina law lets high school students register before legal voting age Fox News

However, I look at it this way....a student LIVES in their college town the majority of 4 years......where does the government get to determine how long you have to live in a town to be considered a voter there? Aren't the students affected by the laws of the town/area?

Agreed. We also have to stop counting prisoners as part of the population where they are incarcerated. If in for a misdemeanor, absentee ballot, if in for a felony, too bad, so sad.

That would hurt rural more republican counties more (especially in NY) but fair is fair.
Are Prisoners allowed to vote?

Not felons. The issue in NY is they count towards county population, thus inflating several rural NY counties.

This actually HELPS NY republicans, but again, fair is fair, and the practice should be ended. Just like College students should not count as residents if in dorms.

Would counting them as county population have something to do with tax roles or benefits?

No, I usually infer death from rusty tire removal devices (disease soaked or not, depending on my mood)

its all about representation, local, state level, and national.

In the NY prisoner example, a usually Pub leaning county gets more population, but not more voters. Thus they get a fake boost in numbers for state and national representation.

In the case of colleges, you have a more liberal student base impacting all levels of representation. When the locals are liberal leaning as well, not an issue. But when they are not you basically have a transient population dictating local politics, as well as higher representation.

Desperate Dems Turn to Fraud, Race-Baiting

RUSH: NAALCP members are being told to go all over North Carolina and tell black people, "Hey, you don't need to register in advance. You can register when you show up. And go anywhere. You don't have to go to an assigned place." So that when they get there and are refused the right to vote, they are then to raise hell, call the news media, which will be on call waiting for the call, and raise holy hell about how North Carolina is discriminating against black voters by not letting them vote, and not letting them register.

Yes they are affected by the laws of the town just like I am affected when I drive through a speed trap town. That I got a ticket there doesn't give me a right to vote there. The reality is that these kids could double vote because there is no integrated system to make sure when you register one place you are unregistered somewhere else. Beyond that, a kid who lives in the fantasy world of college should have no say in local property taxes, city council etc if they have not established residency there. They can go advocate until they turn blue in the face if they so desire, but college dorm life is so insulated from reality, that I doubt many of them have any clue as to the policies of people they may be voting for. They are just straight ticket voting off some dem/gop voter guide.

Yes, I'm aware of the racist haters. Since they are a dying breed - I just laugh at them. Most of them are dumber than owl shit losers and can't even stay on topic.
