The point isn't even the OSHA crap. And i have disability and life insurance, and like workers comp they do not make up for lack of limb or lack of pulse.
The point is, shouldn't there be more laws regarding rights of employees protecting them from even mildly excessive work hours, I don't work 6 days a week four hours a day, I am at work for 8 1/2 hours 6 and 7 days a week because the only law requires overtime pay. There aren't even laws requiring breaks, just law that require the employee be paid for breaks that are 20 minutes or less.
The point I was making was that, contrary to your statement, OSHA and the DOL do look out for the rights and safety of the workers.
Now, going back to your OP, why is it that you cannot get another job, unless you're just referring to the market and economy?
And, BTW, I can really feel for you. I have family in similar situations. The reason companies do these things is because they can get away with it for now. And even though I respect your ani-union stance I also disagree with it. I was in the same situation in a non-union coal mine, got laid off and lucked out by getting a union power plant job where I have been more than 30 years.
