Easier, cheaper option: that paint gun might be mistaken for a real gun by a cop and get you shot dead. You can miss with a paintball or they might have a high threshold of pain. If you really want to go non-lethal as a good all around and legal deterrent that is surprisingly effective, wear a pouch you can carry a handful of salt in. Built right, you load it from the top then can snap it open with the edge of your hand from below dumping the salt into your palm. Done out of sight of the assailant by turning slightly, when they approach you and you throw your arm up, it looks like you are making a simple self-defense move, but by that time they are too close and are hit in the eyes with a face full of fine salt. Even with glasses on, it gets in their eyes.

By the time they realize you threw something, it is too late and they are blinded. Regardless of their state, PCP, etc., even if they can't feel pain, they are totally blind now allowing you to get away or to effect a citizen's arrest, ie: kick the living shit out of them. If you step to the side as you throw the salt, even if they have a weapon, they don't know where you are to aim. Salt in the eyes is intensely painful and will leave them incapacitated a long time. Variant: add some dried ghost pepper powder with the salt.

I agree not best option ....but some people who for many reasons won't carry a deadly weapon.....might be good option.

One can get a permit for pepper spray and taser. I don't like the paint gun because it looks like a gun.
