Noam Chomsky: Is Capitalism Making Life Better?

None of your examples justify the abandonment of a Capitalist economic core...

True, but Capitalism was abandoned circa 1900
The perfect is the enemy of the good.

There has never been a human society free of corruption. Whether those with power abuse you through the government, the legal system, industrial bullying, or the barrel of a gun (in Mao's case), you're still being screwed.

The only way to avoid being a slave to someone else is to have the intelligence, and the luck, to gain power (in the form of personal wealth). Fortunately for us, the American system is one of the greatest meritocracies in the world, with historically unprecedented opportunity to gain power.

Unfortunately, our system is under assault, both from those who run it, and those who profit from it.

What economic system is better?

The answer is 'none' and in fact, capitalism makes for a better life for the already wealthy

Fixed. By the way, I have read all of his books and essays. And...How do you know he's rich? He doesn't write to make money. He writes because he has something important and informative to say. And I, for one, think he's right most of the time.
Do not change quotes, its against the rules.

It also is not 'fixed' what you did was insert your own moronic opinion.

If i wanted your opinion I'd shoot myself for listening to a fool.

Let's see, since Capitalism has been a driving force in the world, we have had a technological explosion like no other, more food is being produced with less effort, and my personal favorate, we no longer have to go to an outhouse when nature calls.

All and all, i think life is better. But maybe you prefer crapping in a shed in your backyard.

You mean all those technological advances that have come from 'socialist' countries like those in Europe? Those kind?

You, of course, ignore that when the advancements occured, they werent socialist.

But then thats inconvenient isnt it?

Well the Brits did invent the Steam Locomotive... and the French created the Dirigible... or was it the hot air balloon?
They wern't socialist at the time.

Still can't believe the socialists beat Churchill. Goebbels was right.
You have to undestand the context of it.

Churchill was not a very popular guy in Britain due to his early career (wasting money on Dreadnaughts before the great war for example) and his mismangement as First sea Lord in WWI (Gallipoli was his fault) so he was out of power for years.

Winnie was a vocal back bencher in the 30s, he was one of the early opponents of appeasement and when Chamberlin's appeasement lead to war Winnie swept back in to the top spot as the PM.

After 5 long war years however, people could not understand why they were still suffering with germany beaten, and they wanted something from out of the war for all their sacrifice. Atlee promised free stuff, churchill didn't.

Atlee won.

I'm sure you had respect for Bush when he said America needs to get off oil.

Bush saying America needs to get off the oil is like the dealer telling you to slow down for a minute and then giving you even more stuff than before.

They weren't? Alexander Fleming's time wasn't a time of great upheaval, of unions being formed and women getting the vote and all those other 'socialist' evils?

I think you need to check your history.....

:D

True, but Capitalism was abandoned circa 1900,

.

Hamilton's vision of capitalism was corporatism. This was the drive behind Federalism and nationalizing our monetary system. And don't look to Jefferson to be a supporter of capitalism, he wasn't but firmly entrenched in agrarianism and an agrarian 'individually responsible' economy. We have never ever been a capitalist nation...
