In today's big White House meeting between Republican and Democratic leaders, Obama said the American people "just want to see work get done." FALSE! We don't just want to see work get done.We want to see the right kind of work get done.

And that kind of work includes a couple of things that Democrats support, and some Republicans very oddly oppose. These are 1.) raising the minimum wage and 2.) raising taxes on the rich to reduce the debt, and supply needed revenue for various projects. Both highly popular with the American people.

No, calling them stupid wars is no slam or slander on the brave men & women who served (and still serve) there. It is a slam on the blithering idiots or spineless fools who SENT them there. How many of those who voted to invade Iraq had children who would serve there?

And the highest tax rate is currently almost 40%. That means the gov't takes, by force, over a third of the money that these people earned. No, raising the taxes on the rich is soaking people for, and punishing them for, bad financial mgmt by administration after administration.

Okay but if getting things done on taxes and minimum wage was not the topic, I would suggest not leading your OP with them next time. And you'll avoid misunderstandings by the more simple types such as myself. :)

As for ISIS, immigration, Ebola, and race hustlers go though, these are topics no more simple than are taxes and minimum wage.

ISIS: there is a legitimate debate with one side wanting to do something about what is perceived as a clear and present danger and one side wanting us to mind our own business and let others deal with that threat.

IMMIGRATION: there is a legitimate debate between those who believe it entirely unfair that law breakers are given rights that law abiding people are not given while others believe it is unrealistic to apply existing law to those already in the country.

EBOLA: there is a legitimate debate between those who think it is not extreme to bar or quarantine under guard those who could put us at risk from this dangerous disease and those who argue such extreme measures would just cause people to lie and hide their exposure to the disease and those who feel the danger is not sufficient to warrant restricting anybody's rights even temporarily.

PANDERING TO RACE HUSTLERS: I don't think it is necessary to spell out how many different definitions would be applied to this depending on each person's ideology and loyalty to a particular political system.

So 'getting things done' in its simplest context isn't so simple as just doing what should be done. First a consensus must be achieved as what should be done. There is no such consensus on any of those topics.

I personally want to see the Fair Tax Act passed. That is a far better taxation system than the convoluted nonsense the IRS does today. We spend $500 billion per year on tax compliance. That is not what we pay. That is what we spend figuring out what to pay and how to keep what we can. That is insane.

IMMIGRATION: there is a legitimate debate between those who believe it entirely unfair that law breakers are given rights that law abiding people are not given while others believe it is unrealistic to apply existing law to those already in the country.

EBOLA: there is a legitimate debate between those who think it is not extreme to bar or quarantine under guard those who could put us at risk from this dangerous disease and those who argue such extreme measures would just cause people to lie and hide their exposure to the disease and those who feel the danger is not sufficient to warrant restricting anybody's rights even temporarily.

PANDERING TO RACE HUSTLERS: I don't think it is necessary to spell out how many different definitions would be applied to this depending on each person's ideology and loyalty to a particular political system.

So 'getting things done' in its simplest context isn't so simple as just doing what should be done. First a consensus must be achieved as what should be done. There is no such consensus on any of those topics.

The topic of the thread is what we, the people, want to see get done. You suggested that ISIS, Immigration, Ebola and pandering to race hustlers is what is important.

Others see other issues as the main and most important issues.

I personally want to see the Fair Tax Act passed. That is a far better taxation system than the convoluted nonsense the IRS does today. We spend $500 billion per year on tax compliance. That is not what we pay. That is what we spend figuring out what to pay and how to keep what we can. That is insane.

I'm not too familiar with the Fair Tax. Is that a flat tax ? If so, I oppose it.

It is a consumption tax, charged at point-of -sale. Every person in the US would pay a 23% federal sales tax on every purchase of new goods and services. Every person. No exceptions and no exemptions. All used goods are tax free. They will figure out the level of poverty (or what it takes to live) and send every person a refund of whatever 23% of that number is. So no one pays taxes on the first $20k (or whatever it takes to live).

Ebola is not the emergency the news media has made it out to be. How many cases have there been in the US? And how many were actually people flying in from places you want a travel ban for? 2 cases?? Both recovered?

A travel ban doesn't have to do with past cases of Ebola. It pertains to potential future cases. It is a preventive measure. Not a curative. I don't get a pnuemonnia vaccine based on how many times I've had pnuemonnia (zero). I get it for the time I may get it in the future.

Immigration is about much more than just violation of law. It is about PROTECTION of the American people from a long list of harms. Microsoft just dumped thousands of loyal, long-time American workers, only to then hire low-wage, foreign replacements. We should be more worried about those American workers than we are about distinctions between legal or illegal immigrants. BOTH are HARMful to Americans.

Harms of Immigration

1. Americans lose jobs. (especially Whites due to affirmative action).

2. Wage reduction.

3. Tax $ lost (due to off books work + lower wages paid).

4. Remittance $$$ lost. ($123 Billion year).

5. Tax $$ lost to immigrants on welfare.

6. Increased crime.

7. Increased traffic congestion.

8. Increased pollution.

9. Overcrowding in hospital ERs.

10. Overcrowding in recreational facilities.

11. Overcrowding in government offices.

12. Overcrowding in schools.

13. Decrease in funds available for entitlements.

14. Cultural erosion.

15. Overuse of scarce resources (oil, gasoline, fresh water, jobs, electricity, food, etc)

16. Introduction of foreign diseases.

The "talking heads" have given us way too many laws, regulations and oppression. Time for freedom for expression, time for a rebirth of:

We have weird instances like the Univ of Florida today as a result of the pressure cooker that we are all subjected to day in and day out as we are all thought of as : "Just Want to See Work Get Done." There is more to life and I believe many are getting tired of succumbing to commute, work, pay taxes, get little in return. At the same time being represented in Congress by people doing basically nothing except receiving advice from Wall Street lobbyists and such.

The talking heads have an agenda and it is a selfish one. The collective voice of the people tends to be for the good of all, at least the majority. The consent of the governed has and continues to be raped. Shame on you all.

Your phrase '....doing basically nothing except receiving advice from Wall Street lobbyists and such' is one of those things that is currently popular. Interview 100 people on the street and you would almost certainly get a substantial majority opinion that Wall Street or lobbyists have far too much influence and power.

And I believe that notion is flawed to the point that any laws that go with what the people want there would do far more damage than any good. I believe the problem lies far more with the government having far too much power to do any thing it wants to do to grow itself and increase the power, influence, prestige, and personal wealth of those in government who use that power to extort money and cooperation from Wall Street etc. This is a concept slow to catch on with a majority of the people who currently prefer to see a bogeyman in lobbyists and Wall Street and the super rich and corporations than seeing the much more serious and sinister problem.

So I'll stand by my statement. Just because something is popular does not make it right. The people should want it, yes, but honorable men and women must also be diligent to be sure the people are informed of all the potential for good and evil in any concept before they ask the people to sign off on it. Had the people been fully informed of what they were getting with the ACA for instance, there is no way in hell their representatives would have dared to vote for it.
