An American was rescued from an Antarctica base by an Australian plane because "there were no US planes available". How's that again?

I guess the military needs another 200 billion or so.

I bet that Nancy needed it to go on vacation with a couple of hundred of her closest friends. Or may Obama was using two of them to fly 4 poeple and a dog to the Vinyard. Just a guess on my part but who knows.

The only American plane that was available was a C-17, and military planes are prohibited in Antarctica.

But I did read where they were going to use it if the Australians couldn't for some reason.

Giving the fact Australia is closer, I would rather the closer plane saved me.
Don't think these people cared what country the plane belonged to.

Why do you assume that an appropriate USAF/USCG/USN aircraft would/should/could be available at all times and at all points of Antarctica -- in the winter?
