After each one of these, we hear the same thing:

If no law was broken, why did the CIA refer the matter to the DOJ for investigation?

And if there are no special counsels, what means will be used in govenmental oversight? Surely you don't expect the government to investigate itself?

BTW, the story is more a compilation of White House talking points than anything genuinely newsworthy. For a thourough and, I think, impartial account of the whole sordid mess, go HERE

Um, they refered the matter to the DoJ to investigate whether a law was broken. I would have thought that anyone could figure that out.

Government has run fine without special counsels for the first 200 years of our existance. In fact, I see no justification for any special counsel in the Constitution. The powers are divided through three branches of government. This "Independent" counsel disrupts the balance of those three branches. They spend millions in dollars of tax payer money and most of the time never find anything that is even worth indicting over. When they do find something its severely politicized so that there is no semblance of actual justice occuring. So what exactly is the point?

Because they play politics and don't like Cheney?

I expect there to be more special councils.

Why is it always these third rate crimes that cause this type of idiocy in DC?

Here is another place with a good Q & A on the case.
