Even in a bedroom community like Bellevue , Wa in the 1960s -the main dept store had soda counters.

They are gone.

Notice how service stations selling gas have been completely replaced by convenience stores selling gas?

These days, there's always a fastfood joint very nearby. And, a number of large stores have eating places within the store.

Wal-Mart & Sam's has fountain soda.

Used to be Wal-Mart, department stores, dollar stores & gas stations did not sell much if any food. Now it is a core part of their business. With over 50 million citizens on EBT or SNAP food debt cards paid for by government, these places must sell a large amount of food to get that business in order to compete.
