To me, this song should've gone all the way, but sadly it only got as far as #28 in 2006.

In general, you can name a bunch of hard rock and prog-rock bands of the late 60s-early 70s, that did not have hits or high ratings in the charts, which now sound better than modern hit songs.
 
Music isn't that rare a talent, so yes, there are many who don't get to the top, and being the 'best' doesn't count for much either. Groups that stay together very long are pretty rare as well.
