A Star-Ledger review of Foundation Harmony, including the application and the backgrounds of its directors, also found that two directors went bankrupt, the foundation is linked to a training school for marijuana growers recently suspended in Colorado and one of the center’s medical advisers has faced several allegations of insurance fraud in New York.

The findings cast fresh doubts on how deeply the state has checked into the backgrounds of key players in its medical marijuana program, a controversial venture that has been plagued by problems and delays since it was signed into law in January 2010 .

A Star-Ledger report last month focused on another clinic, Compassionate Care Centers of America Foundation, and its ties to a wealthy Monmouth County man accused of benefiting from a massive Ponzi scheme. As a result of the story, the clinic stripped the man of any involvement, and state officials said vetting efforts were ongoing.

"Medical marijuana is supposed to be an alternative medicine for suffering patients, not an alternative money market for greedy individuals!" they write in the application.

Vetting of proposed N.J. pot dispensary seems hazy | NJ.com

Fake doctors. Fake diplomas. Fake tax status. Insurance fraud. Felons. Ponzi schemers.

Sounds like it will be "business as usual" in the Garden State.

Why should they? The government is going to be giving out free pot soon.

Wow. Corrupt people with money influencing public policy? The OWS crowd should be outraged!

The Star Ledger does a great job on investigative reporting.

WHAT?!?!?!?

Are you saying that people already involved in the pot trade have links to criminals and know who to call to launder their "cash" transactions?!?!?!?!?

I'm shocked to learn this.

no really. Who could have seen this coming?

Nest thing you'll tell me is that strip clubs are often fronts for whore houses.

If I ask for an original, from the school, so it has a seal and looks all pro and stuff.

Will they print it on hemp paper of regular, just in case?

The mistake New Jersey (and Maine, too) is making is allowing the POLS to turn marijuana into a privately owned distributorship.

Of course we know this isn't really a mistake, don't we?

A mistake implies that they are trying to do good, but failing.

What they're doing is setting up private industries and granting them exclusive licenses to make money.

Basically the states are allowing private MONOPOLIES to form.

Exactly. And NJ is the pharmaceutical capital of the world. Why aren't the drug companies handling this like any other medicine? No one with diabetes or a heart condition can walk into CVS and present their "insulin or high blood pressure card".

They can't have it both ways. It is "medicine" or it is not.

If its a DRUG it ought to be dsitributed at every drug store.

Here in Maine, they're putting marijuana distributorships far away from the population centers.

The government ought to get th ehell out of this business entirely.

No taxes or laws are necessary regarding marijuana.

Just forget about it.

It makes no more sense to regulate POT than it would make sense to regulate mint.

TRENTON — Advocates for medical marijuana say they are not surprised by a slow start for the registry of patients eligible to access the drug legally in the state.

The state Department of Health said Wednesday that since Aug. 9, when the registry opened, 18 patients have signed up for permission to use the drug, which is otherwise illegal.
