more geeknews. my first thought was what if there is something in the manufacturing process that made people suicidal. but that's too far out. after all we know that the steve jobs corps is far too responsible than to let something like that happen. but poor labor relations leading to suicide? heaven forbid! that's the stuff that boycotts are made of.

shar303 writes "A ninth employee has [0]jumped to his death at Taiwanese
iPhone and iPad manufacturer Foxconn, China's state media reports. The
21-year-old worker was the eighth fatality this year. This raises
questions as to whether the shiny finish of the latest gadgets available
from mega corporations are tarnished by such information, and whether the
mistreatment of workers deserves to be highlighted when considering such
    firms."

oh my goodness, with all these rightwingers here are you saying this board is also overrun with die hard macintush users?

did i violate some taboo by taking a mild side swipe at steve jobs? can i balance that by going off on steve ballmer? maybe a quick poke at dave packard will help?

there is a pretty poignant question in the original article that i thought i highlighted some.

if apple's factories are indeed mistreating workers so badly that they are jumping from windows, should that not be a consideration when buying their products?

Industry. The inference is there. Your attack was upon 'big Business' as pseudo-veiled as it was.

not really --- i was aiming specifically at apple and its cult of mentally conditioned consumers.

i suppose there are more general issues involving the whole industry. i know for instance, there's a metal (i forget which, but i could find out quick enough) that is needed for cell phone manufacture that is causing more trouble from claim jumping than the rhino horn poachers were causing before they got that under control.

Isn't there a high suicide rate in some asian countries?
I remember hearing about Japanese people throwing themselves in front of subway trains. I will have to google. lol

Why does the article refer to this as a Taiwanese plant? Shenzen is in the Guangdong province not far from Hong Kong? Foxconn is a Taiwanese company, but still...

the article doesn't say where the plant is located.

maybe the omission has something to do with the BBC and not wanting to ruffle the PRC's feathers.

I read the Yahoo!/Time atricle earlier today. By my way of thinking, and granted that can be a little twisted from time to time, I'd say living in China is just as likely a cause for the suicides as is the work at Foxconn.
