He was still waiting for surgery where they would re break the ankle and reset it.

I fell off a roof and shattered my arm in multiple places when I was 17 on a Friday night around midnight.
I woke up on Saturday at around two in the afternoon with a cast and went home that day.

If you had an accident then you will be within a very short time in a clinic and will wake up next morning in an intensive care unit of a clinic, where an operation team had saved your life.

The year 1914 was by the way the statistical point of no return. Before the year 1914 the chance to survive was lower when you visited a doctor than to trust in other methods. And indeed make doctors often superflous operations today, when this operations bring them a lot of money by low costs. Similarly, another British subject, Keith Richards, was in need of a "blood changing" where he had his blood removed from his veins gradually, and transfusions of clean blood injected into him. The idea was to clean it up so he could pass a drug screen to go to Japan and other countries that require it. Did not have it done by the NHS, instead, he had to go to a clinic in Switzerland.
