Newtie vs. The First Amendment

You are 1 person the library/bookstore is another person. 1 + 1 = 2. How do you get a third party out of this?

If your counting skills and logic are this flawed, there’s no wonder you don’t fear the government.

No the individual and the government are the first two people. its the bookstore/library that is third person.

The upshot of this is, if you are willing to sacrifice some part of the Constitution on the altar of an unending "war on terrorism", the whole will soon follow. If you're comfortable with that, I do pity you as you've fallen victim to the agenda of the far right in this country. Frighten Americans into surrendering their civil liberties. When did we become such cravens?

I think it was when the left starting becoming successful at undermining the moral backbone of our society. Please Bully--this slippery slope argument is lame. If we started worrying about everything that COULD happen we'd all go nuts.

Consider just how easily the Nazis managed to take over the government of Weimar Germany- a country that had a democratic government and whose people supposedly had constitutional civil rights, which Americans take for granted. Many a Hun didn’t accept the slippery slope argument either- people like Papen and Hugenberg who thought they could give Hitler the government and reign in the Nazis in the process. The German on the street (including many Jews) consistently believed that once the Nazis could restore the economy and neutralize the socialist/communist and rebuild the military the Nazis would have achieved their goals and could simply be dispensed with.

Paraphrasing Benjamin Franklin: Anyone who chooses safety at the expense of liberty will have neither and will deserve neither.

Bush targets, well, everyone

p2pnet.net News:- George W. Bush wants your personal information. And yours. And yours.

It's bad enough that the outgoing Cheney / Bush administration is planning to use an Automated Targeting System (ATS) to award what some media are calling a 'terror score' to US citizens. But it doesn't rest there.

The US Department of Homeland Security also wants the addresses, credit card information, billing addresses, cellphone numbers and email addresses of everyone else in the world, including Canadians.

"They won't let you look at the information but they can share it with law enforcement agencies, foreign governments, even public health agencies and they can keep the dossiers compiled on millions of Canadian travellers for up to 40 years," says The Toronto Star.

"It's all in the name of assigning you a score as a potential terrorist."

The Department of Homeland Security was unapologetic, saying the ATS is really just a continuation of a program overseen by another agency for more than a decade, says the story, but privacy advocates say the Bush administration was trying to hide the program.

"The Automated Targeting System mines a vast amount of data to create a `risk assessment' on hundreds of millions of people per year, a label that will follow them for the rest of their lives, as the data will be retained for 40 years,'' said the Electronic Privacy Information Centre, according to The Toronto Star.

Yeah... they're going to be very benign in their use of gathered intel... sure they will.

Why do you continue to ignore the fact that there are Democrats who can access that information ? Is it just too hard for you to like anyone in authority ?

What difference does it make who can access this information as long as they work for the government?

Interesting how the slippery slope y'all libs claim doesn't exist for abortion and homosexual marriage DOES exist when it suits you.

Just exists with regard to the Second Amendment, huh?:happy2:

Each issue should be based on its own merit. Seems to me taking an idea to logicla conclusion is not that hard. If you take abortion and/or homosexual marriage to logical conclusion, the slippery slope is very real.

We've amended laws over the years and have yet to destroy the Constitution, nor the laws become anything more than intended. Sticking with outdated, obsolete legislation just because some fear change of any kind, even if it's to address a current threat to our security is grapsing at straws.
