newt on reagan

you forgot ampad again

But there's so much dirt on this guy, you really can't get it all in. I mean, seriously, it's almost like they are using the "Springtime for Hitler" method to pick the worst possible candidate for the GOP to run.

of course it is.

ampad, ampad, ampad

say it soft and it's almost like praying

Such was Gingrich’s faith in President Reagan that in 1985, he called Reagan’s meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev “the most dangerous summit for the West since Adolf Hitler met with Neville Chamberlain in 1938 in Munich.”

“Measured against the scale and momentum of the Soviet empire’s challenge, the Reagan administration has failed, is failing, and without a dramatic change in strategy will continue to fail. . . . President Reagan is clearly failing.”

Thus Gingrich concluded as he surveyed five years of Reagan in power that “we have been losing the struggle with the Soviet empire.” Reagan did not know what he was doing, and “it is precisely at the vision and strategy levels that the Soviet empire today is superior to the free world.”

Gingrich and Reagan - Elliott Abrams - National Review Online

yeah, that newt, he's a visionary, an acolyte of reagan, a true conservative

the sooner you clowns realize that newt has always been and always will be looking out for newt first, last and always, the better off we'll be.

Sounds like the exact same thing he says about Obama.

This whole line of Romney's attack is a huge stinking pile of crap.

Gingrich was one of Reagans staunchest supporters.

Newt was on the floor of Congress defending Reagan almost ever night on C-span.

I lived thru it.

While Romney was distancing himself from Reagan and Bush saying "I'm an Independent" and "I'm a Liberal" and "I'm a progressive".

you need to educate yourself, my friend. the quotes in the OP are from newt's speeches from the floor of congress.

JoeB on Reagan.

"Trickle-down economics was good for the rich and screwed the working class."

Or some such.

Wow, you know when you've gotten under their skin when they collect books of your sayings they can try to use later.

Never said I was praising Reagan. I'm objective. He did some good things, some bad things and some terrible things. One of the bad things was proving that Supply Side economics really doesn't work.

Too bad no one got the memo.

Newt 2012 today released the following statement announcing that Michael Reagan has endorsed Newt Gingrich for president.

michaelreagan.jpg
"I am endorsing Newt Gingrich for President and here's why:

Newt understands that we must reject and fundamentally change the course that Barack Obama has set for America.

Newt is our only chance in 2012 to contrast a Reagan conservative with Obama's European' styled socialism.

Newt exemplifies the conservative principles my father championed.

Strong national defense, lower taxes and smaller government.

In the 90’s Newt's leadership brought us the Contract with America which changed Washington.

I’m confident Newt can do it again.

We cannot afford a candidate backed by the same Washington insiders who repeatedly tried to undermine my father and the Reagan revolution.

It's time to choose.

Do we go forward with bold ideas or continue with failed policies?

So I ask my fellow Republicans and conservatives to join me in supporting Newt Gingrich for president."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think Reagan's son would endorse Newt if any of these allegations were true?

Of course not.

The Romney and Republican Establishment that backs him are absolutely desperate to even attempt to outright, bald face lie to try to win in Florida.

dude, they're a matter of record.

he said what he said. it's in the congressional record, contemporary news accounts, etc. etc.

they're not allegations when they are proven to be true; they're facts.

give it up

The question is why Michael Reagan endorses Newt in spite of what Newt has said.

If he knows about what Newt has said then it would be interesting to hear his rationale in making the endorsement anyway.

However, chances are good that Michael Reagan doesn't know. Newt has been pretty good at selling his own myth. He's done very well at convincing people everything they need to remember about him are the phrases "Contract with America" and "balanced budget" ... oh and that he's willing to beat the sh*t out of the media.

I lived thru it Del...I remember how close Reagan and Gingrich were in ideology.

That is one of the major reasons I support him.

Michael Reagan said this today:

Ronald Reagan’s eldest son Mike Reagan has issued a statement lambasting Mitt Romney and his supporters for claims that Romney’s Republican presidential rival Newt Gingrich was a strong critic of President Reagan.

Reagan says such claims are false.

<snip>

On Thursday, Mike Reagan, a respected conservative commentator, responded to the Gingrich critics with this statement to Newsmax:

“I am deeply disturbed that supporters of Mitt Romney are claiming that Newt Gingrich is not a true Reaganite and are even claiming that Newt was a strong critic of my father.

“Recently I endorsed Newt Gingrich for president because I believe that Newt is the only Republican candidate who has both consistently backed the conservative policies that my father championed and the only Republican that will continue to implement his vision.

“It surprises me that Mitt Romney and his supporters would raise this issue — when Mitt by his own admission voted for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale who opposed my father, and later supported liberal Democrat Paul Tsongas for president.

“As governor of Massachusetts, Romney’s achievement was the most socialistic healthcare plan in the nation up until that time.

Bullshit, you are just mindlessly parroting your MessiahRushie! :cuckoo:

You know this is going to blow up in Romney's face, right.

The guy is a complete idiot for even trying it.

Floridians LIVED thru Reagan and Gingrich...they remember just like I do what a devoted supporter of President Reagan's Newt Gingrich was and is...while Romney was voting for Carter and Mondale?...Good fricking Grief!!!!

I predict Nancy will endorse Newt before the Florida Primary...and that will be the end of Romney.

Here is Nancy Reagan, when President Reagan was too sick to attend, commending Newt Gingrich: She literally says Ronnie passed the torch to Newt:

Newt is a big government conservative.

And Romney is a big government liberal.

Those are our choices, Brother.

I this Newt will at least try to shrink government, that is why the Republican Establishment is so desperate to derail him.

If he wins, and both the senate and house are Republican controlled, then when he tries, the Congress will be forced to go along or look like hypocrites and lose their seats.

Simple as that.

I know Romney isn't going to do jack crap...he's the establishment firewall to keep that centralized power.

Good Fricken Greif, Amelia...everyone in the Reagan household was fooled, but Liberal Ass Romney knows the truth!

Carter and Mondale must have filled him in.

Why are you talking about what Romney knows? Are you hoping we will forget the quotes we've read and the youtube clips we have viewed?

If you want to deflect us off of Gingrich's actual words, you're going to have to do better than waving Romney's name around.

i lived through it as well, mo, and i would suggest that newt, as usual, was paying lip service to reagan. i don't care what michael reagan says, the record shows that newt was no friend of reagan.

“Measured against the scale and momentum of the Soviet empire’s challenge, the Reagan administration has failed, is failing, and without a dramatic change in strategy will continue to fail. . . . President Reagan is clearly failing.”- newt gingrich, in congress, march 21, 1986

with friends like newt, reagan surely didn't need enemies

the fact that he has zero chance at winning the general election is almost a sidebar.

the fact is he's a lying weasel who would say anything to get elected.

*shrug*

Watch it again...I think you missed the part where Nancy Reagan, standing in for a sick Ronald Reagan says "Ronnie passes the conservative torch to Newt."
