ICE forcing separated parents to accept deportation to see their kids

WASHINGTON — After a court order to reunite more than 2,000 migrant children who were separated from their parents in May and June, the Trump administration has instructed immigration agents to give those parents two options: leave the country with your kids — or leave the country without them, according to a copy of a government form obtained by NBC News.

The new instructions to agents do not allow parents who were separated from their children under President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy to reunite with their children while they await a decision on asylum, a protection sought by thousands of migrant families fleeing violence in Central America.

Advocates say that even migrants who have already passed their initial asylum screenings are being presented with the form. "We are seeing cases where people who have passed credible fear interviews and have pending asylum claims are being given this form," said Lee Gelernt, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union who is leading a class action lawsuit for family reunification.

Hobson Choice?

A Hobson's choice is a free choice in which only one thing is offered. Because a person may refuse to accept what is offered, the two options are taking it or taking nothing. In other words, one may "take it or leave it". The phrase is said to have originated with Thomas Hobson (1544–1631), a livery stable owner in Cambridge, England, who offered customers the choice of either taking the horse in his stall nearest to the door or taking none at all.

They shouldn't need to wait for the decision. Their countries being shitholes is not a reason to grant them a refuge. The fact that they are trying to use their kids to that end just makes it worse.

The answer to them is the same as for many in the US. Just #WalkAway...

This is how things should be. This administration, the American people do not place these families in jeopardy. The people responsible for placing their children, and their families in this bad position are the parents who make the decision to drag them up here and expect the American public to be stupid and gullible. The parents have the choice, take the kids and leave, or abandon the children and leave.

Zero tolerance: If anyone crosses this border illegally, they will be incarcerated. If they have children with them, those children will be taken away from them.

It's not really a Hobson Choice though.

These parents knew before coming that the previous administration was lenient on families. Thus, many were purposely using kids as a means to entry.

There are also multiple cases a fraud, and many of these "families" don't even have official paper work to prove that they are, indeed families.

This is, in fact, one of the most abused routes for child trafficking. The HHS and administration is not only attempting to protect the borders, but decrease instances of human trafficking, and modern slavery.

If such a policy is not implemented and we do not have laws, then word gets out on how to circumvent the system and it only encourages the worst cases of abuse and creates more horrifying cases of victims.

I think what better applies is false dilemma. Either don't come in the first place, dragging your children hundreds of miles, or apply for asylum legally at a border station in the first safe nation, or the moment you are out of danger and don't break the law by border jumping.

Most people fleeing from somewhere bring their children. If you needed to run, would you leave your children behind? This idea is not only illogical, it defies what we know of human nature. Ever see pictures of people fleeing the fighting in Syria, carrying their children and their elderly on their backs? How retarded can right-wingers be?

Most people seeking to make a new life someplace follow the law unless there is a reason to break it.

I live on the border and know many many many folks that have moved to Canada. NONE of them sneak in. NONE.

Many of them have children, and all of them know it would be terrible for them if they got caught sneaking in. They all did it legally, and some waited years to make sure their kids would not be adversely affected.

There is no reason to jump the border, sneak in, and break the laws of the United States, none.

You do not have a winning argument, you are defending criminals.

Sorry bout that,

1. We have a border so don't cross it unless you want trouble.
2. Your country has a border too, stay within it unless your given the right to leave it and go into another country.
3. Respect other nations borders or find yourself in a load of shit.
4. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

Central America isn't Syria

And yet, that's exactly what all those able-bodied men did when they "fled" to Europe. They left their families behind until they could (ostensibly) get set up in a different country. And I'm willing to bet that most Middle Eastern countries are in a lot worse shape than many of the Central American countries claimed by so many illegal invaders in this country.

And they waited in refugee camps and checkpoints to enter until they were processed and cleared. . . .
