New Tax on Indoor Tanning Goes into Effect--I found this odd....

I wouldn't call the tax racist but it will put many of these places out of business, which is what they'd like to see. Soda taxes, salt taxes, fast food taxes etc will be used to "discourage unhealthy" behavior and consequently put even more Americans out of work. But of course the socialists don't give a shit about that whole unemployment issue. The govt can just take care of them.

I am VERY hopeful these taxes will come sooner rather than later. As a smoker, I am quite tired of being taxed to hell and back as a way of paying for everyone else's bad habits.

We'll just have to wait and see won't we? I'm sure many of these places are holding on for dear life as it is.

Its a vanity tax. Yes many "rich" people visit tanning beds, and get botox, and buy yachts. But as the "rich" are being demonized and squeezed, so is the tanning bed employee, the botox salesman, and the yacht builder. How are those industries faring these days?

"Rich" and "squeezed" .... sorry.

Most tanners would skip meals over skipping tanning, if given the choice. I'm not worried at all about the industry. Skin Cancer, there's a real deterrant on a vanity. $1.70? Not so much.

Thinking like that GT is very naïve. Come to NJ. 115 new taxes in 8 years. "But its only a few dollars..." People can be nickle and dimed to death. We'll see...

Yea, and public services need to be paid for. I'd like to see my country in the 21st Century before I die.

Tendrils extending everywhere... big mommy government wants more and more money, more and more power, and more and more control

We are beyond 'out of hand'

Our government keep chipping away, just a little 10%, and a little 10% there. If they do it incrementally, people won't notice themselves bending over and getting th shaft.

Nobody's got a gun to your heads. If you don't want to pay the tax, don't go to a tanning salon.

And maybe get your fat asses off the couch once in a while and go outside where the tanning is free.

Whoa GT, did you really think that is where it all ends. Not only the fed, but now the states see's the carrot also. Seems the state of Washington added its own 10% surcharge. See how this can end having a snowball effect, if people don't wake up soon to out of control governments?

Also now in effect - a tanning tax. Starting Thursday, an extra 10% charge will be added on your trip to the tanning bed. Some businesses expect a slight impact as a result of the surcharge.
New Taxes: Begin Thursday - KCPQ

Stupid Socialists/Progressives. When will this country wake up and give them the boot? This is only the beginning. The Socialists have lots of taxes like this in the works to pay for their mess. It's always the people who suffer for the corrupt politicians' malfeasance. Hey this is what you voted for America. Enjoy.

This is such a true statement. I bitch about the tremendous taxes our government has placed on cigarettes, but if I REALLY wanted to do something about it, I would quit smoking. It is my CHOICE to smoke and my CHOICE to pay the taxes, however unfair I consider them to be. Once our government starts taxing sugary soda, fast food and salt, then some of the rest of you will be forced to make similar CHOICES.

:cuckoo: I don't think that is the point of the thread, Clean. I think it has more to do with the "TAX" and a government that is getting deeper into everyones pocket. But if you think it's not carry on.

Do you visit a tanning bed often, Meister?

Yeah....nothing like your nanny government spanking you when you get out of line, right? I think you would have been a good candidate with the Pavlov Experiment....that is if you were a dog. Keep jumping through the hoops for nanny.

Again, this is my choice. Do you drive a car? Do you have ANY idea how many individual taxes are lumped on cars and their maintenance? Are all drivers nannies too, in your little mind?

Just as VaYank has not quit smoking because of exorbitant taxes on smokers, tanners are not likely to stop tanning because of an extra Buck Seventy tax.

If the price did get too high, then I suspect tanning salons would drop their prices until customers return and find other ways to bring customers in.

Immie

Just more Socialists/Communists punishing the people for their own corruption. The People always pay for the politicians' malfeasance. Expect more of these punitive taxes to come your way as long as the Socialists/Progressives are running things. Better get it in gear America. Time to vote all Socialist/Progressive Democrats...Or else.

NJ lost a ton of money when they raised the cigarette tax. Discouraging behavior was effective; raising revenue was not. You cannot have it both ways. This will hurt businesses that are already hurting thus losing any additional revenue they need for this healthcare boondoggle. I don't want to see any business hurt right now regardless of whether or not I "approve" of what they're selling. If the majority of patrons have spare cash, they can pay for their own skin cancer treatment dontcha think?

If they want to eliminate skin cancer, they should ban sunbathing as well. Uh oh. Coming soon?

Nope....fair skinned and blue eyed. But this isn't the point is it, it goes back to government taxing more, and spending more, and it's not going to stop taxing more and more . The state of Wa. has added a sin tax to bottled water....go figure huh?
