It’s Time to Tax Whitey–

Dems impose a 10% surcharge on the use of ultraviolet indoor tanning beds. White folks feel burned.

The Washington Post reported:
washingtonpost.com

The sun hasn’t exactly set on Solar Planet, but anxiety over the fate of the Arlington tanning salon has been running high ever since a “tan tax” took effect Thursday.

One of the less publicized measures in the new health-care law, the tax imposes a 10 percent surcharge on the use of ultraviolet indoor tanning beds.

Supporters — including the Obama administration, congressional Democrats and dermatologists — have argued that the tax will raise an estimated $2.7 billion toward the cost of expanding health coverage to the uninsured, while discouraging a practice that increases the risk of skin cancer by as much as threefold in frequent users, according to scientific research.

Obama obviously hates white people. I mean it is our GOD given right to be able to tan freely without government interfering with our ability to fry our skin, it is what our founding father fought for!!

A Samoan family member of mine works at, and is a slave to, the Tanning Salon. Hint: Samoans are already dark so it isn't just a "white people tax".

I should probably get her opinion on this and post it eh?

Yes. Civil Liberties also include the right to make yer' own faulty decisions. The problem comes when people don't want to accept personal responsibility for their own faulty decisions.

An example being when professional tanners sue the tanning salon for the cancer they get.

An estimated 30 million Americans use tanning beds each year - 2.3 million are teenagers. It costs about $17 a visit. The 10 percent tax will raise that price by $1.70. It is unclear whether that will be enough to discourage indoor tanners. What is clear, new research finds indoor tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 percent.

My father-in-law (HUGE Republican) wants to know why this law isn't considered racist, since it targets only certain people....

Because it targets a behaviour, not a people.

<insert sarcasm here>

Really? When was the last time you saw a black person getting a tan in a tanning bed?

Light-skinned African American chicks go to, and WORK AT, the one here in Latham.

Your point is that a commodity can't be taxed because of the trends of who use them? That makes it racist, from the git-go? Seriously, man, it's a pretty weak basis for a claim of racism.

Why would they go to a tanning bed? What percentage of patrons of tanning facilities are non-white? Does anyone know?

We need a merge in aisle 7 please!

Oh please...are YOU a MOD now too? Or did you just sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night?
Why are you so angry all the time, always looking to start an argument with someone? Geez! Lighten up. And you might want to try NOT taking everything so damn personally!

Fine....apparently I now have to add "insert sarcasm here" to all reponses to your posts that I make as well. This is getting too difficult.

I don't know the percentage, but it clears acne for a lot of younger people for one. I just don't think you can tax a behavior and call it racist, just because a really small percentage of a certain race don't partake in said behavior. Maybe I'd make an exception in some cases........well...I dunno. I just thought of a tax on doo-rags..... would be pretty racist on the surface, but I don't know if I'd go there with that.........even.

I mean, there's always the choice, still, to not go.

I wouldn't call the tax racist but it will put many of these places out of business, which is what they'd like to see. Soda taxes, salt taxes, fast food taxes etc will be used to "discourage unhealthy" behavior and consequently put even more Americans out of work. But of course the socialists don't give a shit about that whole unemployment issue. The govt can just take care of them.

I feel so sorry for John Boehner.....do you think we should take up a collection to pay for his increased tanning bill?

You honestly think $1.70 is going to be a deterrant and put them out of business? REALLY?

I don't think you know who goes tanning very well.

We'll just have to wait and see won't we? I'm sure many of these places are holding on for dear life as it is.

Its a vanity tax. Yes many "rich" people visit tanning beds, and get botox, and buy yachts. But as the "rich" are being demonized and squeezed, so is the tanning bed employee, the botox salesman, and the yacht builder. How are those industries faring these days?
