new new strain of HIV-thanks to our homosexual friends

Doctors discover new HIV strain

By Marc Santora and Lawrence K. Altman The New York Times Saturday, February 12, 2005
Virus is resistant to nearly all drugs

A previously unknown strain of HIV that is highly resistant to virtually all known drugs and appears to lead to the rapid onset of AIDS was detected in a man last week, New York health officials said Friday.
.
While the extent of the spread of the disease is unknown, officials said the situation was alarming.
.
"We consider this a major potential problem," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The department issued an alert to all hospitals and doctors in the city to be on the lookout for the new strain.
.
The virus was found in a New York City man in his mid-40s who engaged in unprotected anal sex with other men on multiple occasions while he was using crystal methamphetamine.
.
While HIV strains that are resistant to some drug treatments have been on the rise in recent years throughout the United States, city officials said this case was unique and worrisome for several reasons.
.
First, they said, the strain of the disease was resistant to three of the four classes of drugs used to treat HIV from the moment the patient got sick. Typically, drug resistance comes after a patient is treated with retroviral drugs, often because they go off the prescribed course. And, more often than not, a person is only resistant to one or two classes of drugs.
.
But the resistance comes in combination with its rapid transformation into AIDS. Each of those things has been seen before, but never together.
.
In this case, the patient developed AIDS from 2 to 10 months after being infected. Usually, it takes 10 years for the average person infected with HIV to develop AIDS.
.
At a news conference at New York's health department, where Frieden was joined by nearly a dozen doctors and community leaders, several people recalled having that same worried feeling they had more than two decades ago, when AIDS first started appearing.
.
The city has been in close contact with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.
.
More tests need to be completed before it is clear if any combination of drugs can work on this strain of the virus. But given what they know now, Frieden said treatment would be extremely difficult.
.
From the moment the health department learned about this case a week ago, they have been studying complex laboratory tests to figure out what exactly they had on their hands as well as trying to figure out the man's sexual history.
.
Health officials would not go into detail about how many people the man may have had sex with, but they have several investigators trying to track down partners. The man took an HIV test in May 2003 and was negative, health officials said. Investigators believe he contracted HIV in October of 2004, when he engaged in unprotected anal sex with multiple partners while using crystal methamphetamine. The man found some of his partners on the Internet, officials said.
.
Frieden said that the most likely scenario was that the man had sex with someone who had AIDS and had already developed a resistance to drugs. "Whoever gave it to him most likely did not have sex only with him," Frieden said.

It's true. One of them was even a dating service for gay guys and another was called something like "Getting in touch with your sexual orientation."

They don't have control of the content of the ads....

I believe the site that generates the ads picks up on key words of the thread you're on, finds ads which are relevant to the topic a displays them at the top of the page (like Google does when you enter a keyword for a search)....

If you go to another thread.... the ads will be different

Hopefully it's just wipe out all the fags, eh? God's way of "cleaning" the earth?

God damn homos! It's them that has spread AIDS because white heterosexual people NEVER have unprotected sex or share dirty needles.

Think you are reading too much into what he said. Would you prefer this strain of aids kills millions rather than a few?

Wow , what about this . It sounds like America might want to get serious about this disease instead of letting a screaming minority prevent steps for eradication from happening . We have done it their way and look where we are . I'll be first in line to test for this shitty disease , I have nothing to hide.

Physicians and General Public Favor Mandatory HIV Testing; Views Support Findings of Recent Medical Report

FLEMINGTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 2005--Results of a new national survey of 864 physicians and 1,339 members of the general public revealed that a significant majority of both groups believe that mandatory, federally funded HIV testing would improve the overall health of the U.S. population.

The national e-survey was conducted by HCD Research during February 12 -14, as part of its continuing investigation of the social, political and economic issues confronting the U.S. health care system. The margin of error in the survey was plus or minus 3% at a 95% confidence level.

The survey revealed that among the general public:

-- 63% of Americans believe that mandatory, federally funded HIV testing would improve the overall health of the U.S. population

-- 60% indicated that the associated health care benefits of mandatory, federally funded HIV testing outweigh the social implications

-- 40% indicated that the social implications of mandatory, federally funded HIV testing outweigh the associated health care benefits

The most frequently cited social concerns of those representing the general public who were not in favor of mandatory testing were:

Difficulty obtaining life insurance 76%

Job/employment issues 71%

The least frequently reported social concerns were:

The cost of testing is too high for public funding 52%

Difficulty in marriage and other social relations 51%

Inadequate access to medical and psychological counseling 46%

Among the sample of physicians:

-- 64% believe that mandatory, federally funded HIV testing would improve the overall health of the U.S. population

-- 59% reported that the associated health care benefits of mandatory, federally funded HIV testing outweigh the social implications

-- 41% indicated that the social implications of mandatory, federally funded HIV testing outweigh the associated health care benefits

The most frequently cited social concerns by physicians who were not in favor of mandatory testing were:

Difficulty obtaining life insurance 84%

Job/employment issues 77%

The least frequently reported social concerns were:

Difficulty in marriage and other social relations 48%

Inadequate access to medical and psychological counseling 44%

The cost of testing is too high for public funding 34%

"Physicians are a distinct group who share similar education, income and status in society, and it is intriguing that their views reflect those of the general public on serious and evolving health care issues such as this one," noted Glenn Kessler, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, HCD Research.

According to a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine, health experts recommend that virtually all Americans be screened routinely for the HIV AIDS virus, much as they are for cancer and other conditions. In addition, the report cited recent federally funded studies which determined that the cost of routinely testing and treating nearly all adults would be outweighed by a reduction in new infections and the opportunity to start patients on antiviral medications early in the disease progression.

I know I don't have it either Av. The point is, you'd be able to "prove it" to those who may doubt your word.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Gay activists fear the announcement of a rare, highly virulent strain of the AIDS (news - web sites) virus being found in a New York man may fuel panic of an HIV (news - web sites) "superbug" and further stigmatise their community.

oooh poor babies. stop spreading the disease and you wont have a problem.

New York City health officials said last week that the strain, known as 3-DCR HIV, was unresponsive to three types of anti-retroviral medications and greatly accelerated the transition from infection to full-blown AIDS.

The virus was diagnosed in a man in his late 40s who reported having unprotected sex with multiple male partners, often while using the highly potent narcotic crystal methamphetamine.

Some gay activists and AIDS specialists believe the New York Health Department jumped the gun with its announcement, arguing that a lot more research was required to determine the precise nature of the virus strain in question.

Naturally, rather than notify the public about a potential major threat and maybe get it under control before it becomes as bad as the first strain of aids we want to keep it under wraps. the political agenda of the gay community is more important than stopping this disease.

Calling on the city authorities to clarify the facts, the New York-based Community HIV/AIDS Mobilisation Project (CHAMP) warned of the risk of stigmatising gay men as "crazed drug addicts, carelessly or wantonly spreading a killer bug."

New York Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden had described the case was "a wake-up call" to the gay community, particularly those who may use crystal methamphetamine.

"What would be dangerous," responded CHAMP executive director Julie Davids, "is for this to be a wake up call to the gay community to feel more shame and self-hatred."

Why the hell would it be dangerous for the gay community to wake up and feel shame for their total disregard to public health and safety. maybe they should be feeling self-hatred. maybe they need to get off their sore ass and take reponsibility for their poor choices and "consequence free" activities. Maybe they should feel some sort of emotions for putting themselves and their politics over human lives.

Gay activists, while recognising the responsibility of their own community to promote safe sex, argue that the federal government has hampered progress by favouring a message of abstinence over condom use.

Oh yeah. Heaven forbid we teach people the only true way to avoid this is not to have sex outside marriage. Heaven forbid we teach people that sexual acts have consequences that can affect the rest of your life and the lives of millions to come afterwards. You play with fire and you get burnt. its a fact of life. and unless you start learning to control fire you are going to be screwed. no pun intended.

"It is a real cause for concern," Riggs said. "In San Francisco, if you're a gay or bisexual man using crystal you're 300 to 400 percent more likely to get HIV."

Holy crap how stupid do you have to be do be in this group.

Avatar, my dear, you are NOT totally free of getting this disease. I know that you have very high morals. And tho' I'm sure the woman you choose as your wife will too, somewhere along the line she may have weakened. In order to not get this disease, your partner must be also free.
It's a shame that our society has come to this. The vows of love, honor & cherish, keeping yourself wholly unto one another, MUST be taken seriously.

We are on Google now and I believe that we are the #1 choice if you look for a political messageboard. I believe that those are google advertisements and i'm not sure how they work or if they are monitored. Better question for Jimmy.

In a perfect world I would prefer that nobody die, regardles of race, religion or sexual orientation. I just don't feel is is correct for us to lay blame to a certain group of people.

Any group who denies a public health problem to avoid STIGMATIZATION is culpable, regardless of their politically protected status. We deal in truth here.

In a perfect world no one would die period.

Regardless how you feel the homosexual community is responsible for this epidemic. they could have stopped it before it started just by exercising some self control before it got out of hand.

The truth is AIDS is a fully preventable disease. The main group responsible for spreading the disease is the homosexual community. Until they are willing to face the truth of whats happening, they will continue to die. I dont feel its correct to ignore the truth and watch people die just because i might be branded as a bigot, homophobe or any other derogatory name. The truth may hurt sometimes but its always right.

Guess what Intrepid , there is no such thing as a perfect world , never has been . . . never will be .
No matter how many times naked clicks his heels together it's not gonna happen .

I had a friend in Denver , a guy that I worked with . He was hilarious , he could do a great Ethel Merman impression and was just a naturally funny guy . He used to tell me about weekends spent at the bath-house doing assorted drugs and having as many as 20 partners ... . he died at the ripe old age of 38 . The world lost a talented , funny , intelligent artist that day . . . I lost a friend.
Sure , there are promiscuous heterosexuals , I used to be one . . .then I grew up and realized how lucky I was to have survived those days without hurting myself or others (back then the worst that could happen was getting stuck with herpes forever). Those were the 70s , very innocent times compared to today .
Like jumping out of an airplane and risking the one time that chute won't open , that is what loose sex is today . There are people that skydive thousands of times and die of old age . . . others eat a dirt sandwich the first time out , that is life and death . . .it's serious business .Wishing for a perfect world and walking around with blinders on is a sure way to be eaten alive .
