New Jersey trying to make sports betting legal

The push-back is in full force against New Jersey trying to legalize sports gambing in casinos and horseracing tracks:

I find the major sports leagues position that more widespread legal sports gambling would negatively impact thier buisnesses to be comical. Go to any local bar in almost any city, and you can get a phone number for a bookie to make sports bets. The underground sports gambling market is Billions of dollars per year. This money also usually goes in part to organized crime. Isnt the fact that you dont see where this money is going more detrimental to the integrity of the sport?


Why wouldnt the government want this to come to the surface? Think of all the money they could make on taxes/fees.

It is ridiculous to only allow it in four states. The people of NJ voted for it and it has bipartisan support. And AC NEEDS to be able to compete with Vegas and neighboring states that now allow gambling. Christie knew this would be a long legal battle, but according to this article, we have a good chance of prevailing. Wouldn't it be refreshing if Obama signed one of those executive order thingies he's so good at to avoid this costly fight?

If New Jersey succeeds, PASPA would be nullified, opening the door for other states. Such a bill is pending in the California state Assembly, the lower house of its Legislature, and a few other states are closely monitoring the New Jersey legal battle, industry watchers say.

Casinos and Race Tracks bring out the dregs of Society. Nearby Gettysburg voted down a Casino just for that reason and I'm glad they did.

I disagree but the fact is that NJ already has gambling. I doubt if sports betting will attract more dregs. In fact many illegal sports betters are just regular people.

Dregs may be a portion of the gambling population, but they are not a majority. I go to a casino 2-3 times a year, bet on horses 2-3 times a year, and bet on sports occasionally. Technically the weekly pool me and my friends run is illegal (federally not by state law, as we dont take a cut from it for the person running it). Its just silly that the government just doesnt regulate it and take it from out of the Mob's control.

And if they do attract the dregs of society, isnt it nice to have them all in one place where you can keep an eye on them?

True. I had a good friend back home...in the sports betting business. He was just as respected as the policemen, lawyers, doctors and judges that placed their bets with him...illegally.

While there are violent bookies out there, most of them just stop taking bets from you if you get too deep and cant pay, and they tell others about your lack of payment. You dont end up with broken legs, you just end up not being able to gamble anymore until you get even.
