Better to ask why men and women should be separated in public.

This is a cheap spin by the media.
Most simple answer - because they want to.

The matter here is not separation in all or even most public spaces, but specifically the attempt to ban the ability to organize open Torah lectures, concerts etc. by the community as they wish, and see as most appropriate.

Some municipalities actually closed such events, forcing no choice but adherence to the particular secular dogma. Therefore the backlash and the spins before elections.

But hey don't say I didn't prepare You guys upfront - Israelis going back to roots, this wasn't some detached wishful thinking - it's wonderful.
