German Chancellor Angela Merkel should not have taken part in a ceremony in France on Sunday marking the centenary of the Armistice as it is an event for the 'winners' of World War One, said the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Germany lost the war and Merkel's participation in a ceremony for the former allies amounted to an attempt to rewrite history, AfD co-leader Alexander Gauland said.

It’s absolutely true that having Germany there at the ceremonies is an insult. Germans introduced chemical warfare in WWI which brought much misery and death to Brits on the front lines. Even today the Germans celebrate the German scientist that headed the chemical warfare program by naming streets after him.

But hey, President Trump has to cancel a helicopter flight due to rain and that’s a bigger insult than the Germans who brought so much misery to Allied soldiers by wonderful weapons like chlorine and mustard gas.

Who "won" WW1 anyway?

We could say the poor won, post WW1 things were very much different. Without this war, the struggle towards freedom in the west would have been much harder.

We could say no one won, too many people died and lost a lot. The post war period was also a disaster.

We could go for "the allies won" simply because the Germans surrendered, Germany certainly lost, but then picked itself up and become an economic power anyway.

We could say Hitler won. Without WW1 Hitler would never have been known.
